SpiceJet, a prominent airline based in Delhi International Airport, has recently announced a significant expansion of its fleet. In a disclosure to the Bombay Stock Exchange on March 14, the airline revealed it has finalized lease agreements for an additional ten aircraft. This strategic move is set to bolster the airline’s capacity in time for the bustling 2024 Northern Summer travel period. The announcement, however, left the identity of the lessor(s) unspecified.
This expansion is a direct response to the increasing demand for air travel, particularly during the peak summer months. SpiceJet aims to cater to this surge in demand effectively, ensuring a robust service offering for its customers. The airline also highlighted its recent acquisition of three airframes following the resolution of several lease disputes. Although specifics regarding the source of these aircraft were not disclosed, reports by ch-aviation suggest that two of these airframes were secured as part of a settlement with Echelon Ireland Madison One Ltd., a special-purpose vehicle owned by Pacific AirFinance, based in California.
Furthermore, in a subsequent stock exchange filing on March 15, SpiceJet disclosed the finalization of a lease agreement for two A340 aircraft from an undisclosed operator. These planes are intended to serve the upcoming Hajj season, operating from Guwahati and Srinagar. It remains unclear whether these two A340s are included in the batch of ten aircraft announced earlier.
SpiceJet’s proactive approach to expanding its fleet comes on the heels of successfully raising USD127.9 million, contributing to a larger capital raising goal of USD271.5 million. These funds have played a crucial role in allowing the airline to settle longstanding legal disputes and reinforce its operational capabilities through the acquisition of additional aircraft.
Currently, SpiceJet’s fleet comprises 64 aircraft, which includes eight wet-leased planes. However, operational challenges persist as 29 of these aircraft are listed as inactive. This includes a significant portion of its Boeing and DHC-8-Q400 fleet. Despite these challenges, SpiceJet remains committed to enhancing its service offerings and operational efficiency, catering to 43 airports across five countries.
