January Events To Start 2023 Right
The festive season may be winding down, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t scores of wonderful things to do in January. In fact, with many of the nation’s best seasonal light displays staying on into January, it’s destined to look a lot like the holidays well into 2023. January events in 2023 are highlighted by the early arrival of the Lunar New Year, the kick-off of Mardi Gras season and a host of winter carnivals, cold-weather swims, jazz festivals, ice carving competitions and dozens of other fun things in between to do around the country. With this group of great January events, there’s no doubt that 2023 is going to get off on the right foot. Click on the slideshow to find a January event for you and your crew.

Alabama
The holiday fun will stretch well into the new year at Rickwood Caverns State Park, where the Wonderland Under Warrior event will keep the park’s caves filled with holiday lights and festive displays until January 8. The same can be said for the brilliant Glow Wild animal-inspired lantern display at the Birmingham Zoo, which runs all the way through January 16. Later in the month, Mardi Gras in Mobile and the Gulf Coast kicks off on January 21 with the Krewe De La Dauphine parade on Dauphin Island and the town of Foley will be a great place to be during its Gumbo & Alabama Slammer Festival on January 28.

Alaska
Sure it’s a little frosty this time of year, but since Alaskans are known for embracing the splendor of the season with gusto, you’ll be glad you joined them. Sitka’s St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Cathedral celebrates Russian Christmas on January 2-6, presenting an opportunity to learn about the town’s unique cultural history. Anchorage’s extensive network of trails is at its best in January, so test out your snow-biking or skiing skills with the locals before hopping aboard the Alaska Railroad’s Aurora Winter Express for a one-night travel experience you’ll never forget. The state’s biggest city is also the place to be for the Anchorage Folk Festival (January 19-29), which will show off the sounds of great folk artists from across the nation.

Arizona
You have until January 17 to experience the beloved annual Grand Canyon Celebration of Art, featuring artists working outdoors to capture the majesty of the South Rim (works will be displayed at Kolb Studio in Grand Canyon Village). Elsewhere, the Tucson Jazz Festival will bring smooth sounds to the Sonoran Desert (January 13-22) while the Native American Fine Arts Festival will take place in Litchfield Park on January 14-15, with those same dates seeing the Rock ‘n’ Roll running series returning to Phoenix. Last but not least, the nationally-acclaimed Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase will return on January 28 and run into mid-February.

Arkansas
Little Rock Zoo’s silk-covered lantern display GloWILD! and its 50,000-plus lights will shine bright through January 7, while Hot Springs will host the Arkansas Shorts short film festival on January 6-8. Little Rock’s Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will perform Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet on January 28-29 and the Ozark Mountain Music Festival will once again bring its sensational sounds back to Eureka Springs (January 19-22).

California
The cherished New Year’s tradition that is the Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl will take place on January 2 this year in Pasadena while the A-list Palm Springs International Film Festival will take place January 5-16. Lunar New Year Celebrations will take place all over the state, but none are as famous as the one in San Francisco, which will begin the party with its Flower Market Fair on January 14-15. Elsewhere, wine country will be the place to be during the middle of the month for the Napa Truffle Festival (January 13-16) and Winter Wineland in Sonoma County (January 14-15) while Mendocino County will celebrate the bounty of the sea at its Seafood & Sips Festival (January 27 – February 5).

Colorado
Make for Aspen during the middle of the month for Wintersköl (January 12-15)—the city’s signature event that raises a glass to the mountain lifestyle with snow sculptures, concerts and plenty of frivolities—and then come back for the adrenaline rush of the X Games (January 27-29). The end of the month sees snow come to life in Breckenridge at the annual International Snow Sculpture Championships (January 23-February 1). Then, if you’re still in the mood for some frost-kissed fun, head to Ouray for the annual Ice Fest (January 19-22), the biggest ice-climbing festival in the country.

Connecticut
Disney on Ice will start the month off right with a stop in Hartford (January 5-8) while the capital will also see the grand opening of the Inspire Center—an attraction dedicated to learning history and problem-solving—on January 7. On the coast, Mystic Seaport will start its Murano Mornings series on January 19, which will shine a light on the glass and lace-making of Venice and its lagoon (select dates through the month) and at Mohegan Sun Resort in Montville, the Sun Wine & Food Fest will once again heat up the winter nights (January 16-29).

Delaware
Are you brave enough to start your year with a dip in the Atlantic? Even if you opt to stay warm and dry, stop by Dewey Beach on New Year’s Day for the Dewey Dunk—a group sea plunge for a good cause. If holiday warmth is still on your mind, then swing by the Winterthur Museum Garden & Library for their Yuletide at Winterthur event that will see the stately home decked out in its seasonal finest all the way through January 8. Newark will host its Restaurant Week January 19-25 and the Delaware Symphony Orchestra will kick off its 2023 season in style in Wilmington on January 20 with its Classics III concert.

Florida
The Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival kicks off the year (January 6-15) with a series of informative and fun events that come to a crescendo with concerts by Dru Hill and Jazz Funk Soul. South Beach is the spot to be for the 46th Annual Art Deco Weekend Miami (January 13–15), which will once again celebrate all things Art Deco through live music, dancing, guided walks, a classic car show and much more. The middle of the month will also be the time to visit Crystal River for the annual Manatee Festival (January 14-15) and on the Panhandle, the 30A Songwriters Festival will feature over 200 performances (Lyle Lovett, Gin Blossoms, Yola and Morgan Wade among others) at over 30 venues in South Walton County.

Georgia
The Atlanta Botanical Gardens will run its Garden Lights, Holiday Nights event all the way through January 14 while Georgia will host numerous parades and celebrations on January 16 to honor native son Martin Luther King, Jr. on his eponymous federal holiday (Athens and Savannah are known for great parades). Later in the month, get into the spirit of Mardi Gras during “Lanta Gras”, which will take place on January 28 in ATL’s Kirkwood neighborhood and feature a fun procession followed by live music and libations.

Hawai’i
Head to Honolulu’s Chinatown for the 2023 Night in Chinatown Festival on January 14 which will celebrate the Lunar New Year early with a myriad of festive events like a parade and lion & dragon dances. The official Lunar New Year date—January 22—will see numerous celebrations take place across the state as well. On Maui, the 15th Annual Maui Oceanfront Marathon will take place on January 15 and that same weekend will see the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra on Oahu kick off their season with twice-daily performances of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 (January 14-15).

Idaho
Spend the first moments of January watching the New Year’s Eve Potato Drop in Boise but then come back to the capital for the Field-to-Fork Festival on January 19—a delectable event that will showcase local food. Over in Coeur d’Alene, warm and gooey comfort food will be on the agenda at the Mac & Cheese Festival on January 14, where local chefs will compete to win the “Golden Noodle”. Finish your month in McCall, where the town’s annual snowy soiree called the Winter Carnival will kick off on January 27, once again celebrating the wonder and fun of the snowy season.

Illinois
Start out 2023 in the town of Alton for the Alton Eagle Ice Festival (January 7)—where there will be a range of fun things to do centered around the return of the local winter Bald Eagle population. Then, roll into Rockford in the middle of the month for the 37th Annual Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition (January 18-21), which will see sculptors from all over the state vying for the chance to represent Illinois in the national championships. The Windy City will see the return of the ever-popular Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival (January 18-20), kick off its annual Restaurant Week on January 20 (runs through February 5) and finish the month with a bang on January 29 at its annual Lunar New Year parade in Chinatown.

Indiana
Head to the town of Shipshewana for its annual Ice Festival & Chili Cookoff (January 20-21), where you’re eyes will be dazzled by ice sculptures and your taste buds tantalized by some of the finest chili recipes in the state. In Indy, the spirit of the holidays will glide all the way through January 29 at Holliday Park and its seasonal ice rink while the capital city is also the spot to be late in the month for the Devour Indy (January 23 – February 5), a food & cocktail festival set at various venues across the city. Finally, the town of Richmond will show off its ice carving prowess during the Meltdown Winter Ice Festival on January 27-29.

Iowa
Start your month in Des Moines warming up at the Confluence Brewing Company’s Chili Cookoff (January 7) before heading over to the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden for their Sip & Stroll event, where you’ll be able to enjoy the lush surroundings of the gardens while enjoying a glass of wine. The small town of Keokuk will play host to the 39th Annual Bald Eagle Appreciation Days, with festivities kicking off on January 21. Finally, the last weekend of the month sees the return of The University of Okoboji Winter Games to the Iowa Great Lakes region, where broomball, softball, bags, fireworks, kite flying and the popular—and slightly insane—Polar Plunge lake dive all take place in tje great Iowa outdoors.

Kansas
Wichita will begin the new year with its First Friday Gallery Crawl on January 6 and will also host fun events like the Cars for Charities Rod & Custom Car Show (January 13-15) and Beerfest at Wichita Brewing Company (January 28). In Lawrence, both the Kansas Jayhawks men’s and women’s teams will host games at Allen Fieldhouse during the month while the cool college town will also see Lawrence Restaurant Week take place at venues throughout town on January 19-29. And in Topeka, the town’s beloved CoreFirst Ice Skating on Evergy Plaza stays open all the way through January 29.

Kentucky
The artsy river town of Paducah’s National Quilt Musem will play host to the Say Your Piece exhibit—a striking display that features a dozen quilts made by female African American artists that reflect on both their accomplishments and the challenges they’ve faced—all month long. Gilbertsville will be hosting a celebration of Bald Eagles at Eagles Weekend on January 20-22 (events include eagle viewing cruises!) and in Lexington, Rupp Arena will play host to multiple Kentucky Wildcats games and serve as the venue for the Winter Jam Christian music festival on January 27.

Louisiana
Just when the holiday season ends in many places around the country, the Carnival season kicks off in Louisiana. New Orleans will see multiple parades on January 6 including the famous Phunny Phorty Phellows, who will take their annual ride on the trolleys of St. Charles Avenue. That is also the date for the start of Fan Expo, a Comic-Con-style event held in the city. Elsewhere, Battle of New Orleans Commemoration Week will take place across Southern Louisiana from January 6-8 and Stars Wars fans will want to be in New Orleans on January 28 for the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus parade.

Maine
If you’re brave enough—or still wearing a “beer jacket” from the night before—then head for Old Orchard Beach on New Year’s Day for the Lobster Dip, which will see folks taking to the freezing water of the Atlantic for a good cause. They’ll be doing the same thing in Kennebunk at the annual Freezin’ For a Reason Atlantic Dip, too. Embrace the season but stay dry in Rangeley Lakes at Snodeo (January 19-22), where there will be snowmobile races, cardboard box races and fireworks among other wintry fun.

Maryland
Head to Cambridge on the Eastern Shore for the Ice & Oyster Festival on January 13-14, where you’ll be able to take in the sight of ice sculptures and indulge in the flavor of fresh local oysters. Baltimore Bead Society will hold its 15th Annual Winter Bead and Jewelry Show on January 14-15 and the Baltimore Museum of Art will be the place to be to take in A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration, a fascinating look at African American culture (through January 29). Last but not least, you have until January 16 to sail across the seasonal ice skating rink at the city’s Inner Harbor.

Massachusetts
Head to Carson Beach in South Boston on New Year’s Day to see (or join) the L Street Brownies as they take their annual Polar Plunge into the freezing water of Boston Harbor. Indoors, the Boston Opera House will host Hamilton, which will begin a two-month run on January 17. All travel lovers will want to be at the Hynes Convention Center for the Boston Travel and Adventure Show on January 21-22.

Michigan
The brilliant Wild Lights illuminations will keep things feeling merry & bright at the Detroit Zoo through January 8 and on the cultural front, Detroit Jazz: The Legacy Continues will continue its run showcasing the Motor City’s role in the jazz world at the Charles H. Wright Museum. Grand Rapids will kick off its World of Winter (the largest winter festival in the Midwest) on January 6—a two-moth long event that will once again bring art, music and the warmth of great food & drink to the city’s streets. For fans of winter sports from the Nordic regions, the 136th Annual Ski Jumping Tournament will take place on January 20-21 in Ishpeming.

Minnesota
Start 2023 in style at IceFest in Breezy Point (January 6-7), where there will be a host of fun things to do which embrace the spirit of winter. If you spotted a narwhal (aka the “unicorn of the sea”) in a holiday film and want to learn a little more about these graceful & mysterious sea creatures, then head to the Bell Museum in St. Paul through January 8 for the Narwhal: Revealing an Arctic Legend exhibit. Elsewhere, the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships return to Minneapolis (January 19-29) and January 25 sees the start of the Great Northern festival, a Twin Cities tradition that sees a series of cultural and culinary events take place.

Mississippi
State capital Jackson will be the place to be the week of January 8-15 as its JXN Indie Music Week returns to town while the city’s historic Duling Hall will be the setting for Voices of Freedom: A MLK Day Celebration on January 16. Down in Biloxi, you’ll be able to stay in the holiday spirit as the Mississippi Coast Coliseum & Convention Center will continue its public ice skating sessions all month long and up in Southhaven the Rodeo of the Mid-South returns to town on January 28.

Missouri
The St. Louis Botanical Garden’s popular Garden Glow event will run through January 7, featuring over two million lights and interactive experiences. Across the state, Kansas City will host its annual Restaurant Week (January 13-22) and down in Springfield, January 14 is the day for the 3rd Annual Mac & Cheese Festival. Lastly, the historic town of St. Charles near St. Louis will host the Fete de Glace ice carving competition on January 28.

Montana
Windward with Chinook Winds will come to Great Falls on January 6 to perform tunes in a chamber music setting while the Valier Ice Fishing Derby will take place on Lake Francis on January 14. Butte will once again play host to their SNöFLINGA Winter Festival (January 20-22), which will fill the days with fun activities like curling, snow-biking and Nordic skiing lessons. Finally, January 14 & 21 will see the Big Sky Winter Market take place in Big Sky, where visitors will be able to shop a range of artisan products.

Nebraska
Start out 2023 by taking in the last two days of Omaha’s impressive Holiday Lights Festival, which sees impressive displays set up around the city while Nebraska City’s Arbor Lodge State Historical Park will continue its fun Winter Fun Weekends event on weekends through January 29. End your month back in Omaha at the NCA Lunar New Year’s Gala on January 28, which will celebrate the Year of the Rabbit with a show by traditional Chinese instrument performers.

Nevada
There’s no doubt that New Year’s celebrations will roll well into the day of January 1 (or later!) in Las Vegas and the rest of the month is full of great events too, including musical performances from the likes of Adele, Bruno Mars, Lionel Richie and Bryan Adams in addition to comedy shows from Chris Tucker, Wayne Brady, Daniel Tosh and many more. Ely is the spot to be for the Winter Fire & Ice Festival (January 13-15), which will celebrate the season and offer the chance for visitors to enjoy ice bowling, historic train rides, bonfires and live music. Lastly, the famed National Cowboy Poetry Gathering will kick off its 38th edition in Elko on January 30.

New Hampshire
Disney on Ice visits Manchester on January 7 while Cirque du Soleil comes to town this month too with their Corteo show (January 19-22). At the end of the month, attend the 22nd New Hampshire Sanctioned & Jackson Invitational Snow Sculpting Competition to see sensational works crafted from snow and enjoy a range of family-friendly activities (January 27-29).

New Jersey
Early in the month, North Haledon will play host to the 64th Annual Model Train Show (January 7-8) and the Bergen County Zoo’s Let It Glow: A Holiday Lantern Spectacular will keep the nights bright & merry through January 15. At the end of the month, some of the most famous monster trucks in all the land will descend on Newark at the Monster Jam (January 27-29).

New Mexico
Start your year out at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque, as the center will be hosting the Pueblo Gingerbread House Contest through January 6 and the much-loved Native American Youth Art Show through January 8. In Santa Fe, the Railyards area will host the Winter Brew 2023 beer festival (January 20) and the Last Friday Art Walk (January 27).

New York
Lightscape at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden will run through January 8 and NYC’s Lincoln Center will host the 20th Annual GlobalFEST on January 15—an event that brings multiple stages of international music to the Big Apple. Elsewhere, Winter Jazzfest takes place in the Big Apple on January 12-18 and the Hudson Valley’s Mohonk Mountain House will host the Jazz on the Mountain music festival on January 20-23.

North Carolina
Keep the spirit of the holiday season going at the Biltmore House—where the Christmas at Biltmore event will run through January 8—and in Elizabeth City, where the Hot Cocoa Crawl will go all the way through January 15. Then, make for Charlotte as the city’s famed Harvey B. Gantt Center will commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with reflective programming on January 16. End your month with a trip to the 25th Annual Blowing Rock WinterFest on January 26-29, which will once again fill the wintry days with fun activities like ice carving, polar dunks, tomahawk throwing, a chili cooking contest and more.

North Dakota
Fargo will once again be the finest place to find yourself in ND at the start of the year as the city’s Frostival event returns on January 14. The celebration will run through late February and will include events like a chili cook-off, cardboard sled races, a horseshoe tournament and the chance to savor s’mores & bonfires at neighborhood ice rinks. Later in the month, make for Grand Forks for the Happy Harry’s Pork & Brew bacon and craft beer festival (January 28) or head to Devil’s Lake for the 39th Annual DLVFD Ice Fishing Tournament (January 28).

Ohio
Start 2023 off at The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, where the recently-opened The Beatles: Get Back to Let it Be will run all month long. Also in the ‘Land, Cleveland Pierogi Week—a celebration of the city’s famed Polish dumplings—will begin on January 30. In Columbus, the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens will host its Conservatory Aglow event (think thousands of twinkling lights, gingerbread houses and wintry foliage) through January 8 and over in Cincinnati, the beloved Ice Rink at Summit Park will also run through January 8. Finally, head to Hocking Hills State Park on January 21 for the 58th Annual Hocking Hills Winter Hike, an event that sees groups of hikers explore the park together.

Oklahoma
The name may be Downtown in December, but Oklahoma City’s signature winter festival rolls well into the new year, with its signature, 55,000-foot Devon Ice Rink welcoming skaters until January 29. Over in Tulsa, the seasonal Winterfest event will continue delighting the crowds through January 8, which is the same day the Round Barn Rendezvous returns to Arcadia—an event that features live acoustic music filling the historic Route 66 landmark. Finally, make your way to the Myriad Botanical Gardens on January 21 for a Lunar New Year celebration featuring a performance from the Hung Viet Lion Dancers and other fun happenings to usher in the Year of the Rabbit.

Oregon
Portland is the place to be for two great January music festivals: the Portland Old Time Music Gathering (January 12-15) and the Portland’s Folk Festival (January 13-15). In addition, the city’s gorgeous Lan Su Chinese Garden will kick off its 16-day Lunar New Year Celebration on January 21. Over in Bend, January 22 is the date for the annual Tour of Meissner Nordic ski event which takes place on the local Virginia Meissner trail system.

Pennsylvania
The Keystone State keeps things cooking well after the New Year’s Eve fireworks have gone out, with the Somerset Fire & Ice Festival taking place on January 13-15, an event that brings the heat when it comes to fun things to do (think ice sculptures, fireworks and fantastic food & drink). Pittsburgh will hold its Winter Restaurant Week on January 9-15 and Altoona will hold its annual ode to anime Setsucon on January 13-15.

Rhode Island
Start off 2023 in style by being at Newport’s Easton’s Beach at noon on New Year’s Day to witness (or take part in!) the annual Polar Bear Plunge. Providence will hold its Restaurant Week on January 8-21 and the city will also host Jagged Little Pill—the musical inspired by Alanis Morissette’s groundbreaking 90s album—on January 17-22.

South Carolina
Charleston will start the year off with its cherished Emancipation Proclamation Parade on New Year’s Day, which has been taking to the streets of the Holy City since the 1860s. Restaurant Week South Carolina takes place all over the state on January 12-22 and the National Shag Dance Championships will hold their preliminaries in Myrtle Beach on January 27-28. Finish your month strong with some seriously good seafood at the Lowcountry Oyster Festival in Mount Pleasant on January 29.

South Dakota
Sioux Falls’ marvelous seasonal light display Winter Wonderland will beautifully illuminate the city’s signature cascades all the way through January 8 and the city will also play host to the 35th Annual Frosty Frolics event (January 6-8), a family-friendly celebration of outdoor winter fun. And up In the Black Hills, the Pro Snocross races return to Deadwood on January 27-28.

Tennessee
Music City is loaded with fun things to do in January, with just a few of the big-name concerts scheduled being Barry Manilow (January 20), Kenny Wayne Shephard (January 27) and Carin León (January 29). Naturally, The Grand Ole Opry will perform Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays all month long, too. Memphis will host the 2023 Elvis Birthday Celebration (January 5-10) and the International Blues Challenge (January 24-28).

Texas
Austin is famed for its live music and the city’s Red River Cultural District will once again be hosting its famous Free Week—a free concert series—in 2023 (January 5-7). Elsewhere, the famed Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo will kick off on January 13, the Luckenbach Blues Festival takes place on January 14 and Houston will hold its 29th MLK Grande Parade in Midtown on January 16. At the end of the month, Laredo kicks off its famous George Washington Birthday Celebration on January 18.

Utah
Park City is always a great place to be when there’s snow on the ground, but January is the month when the world comes to town to toast independent film during the Sundance Film Festival (January 19-29). Two other great Utah events this month are the Bluff Balloon Festival (January 13-15) and The Millsite On Ice Fishing Tournament (January 13-14).

Vermont
Just when you thought the resort town of Stowe couldn’t get more appealing in winter, they will once again be throwing their annual Winter Carnival on January 19-22, which will fill the streets with ice sculptures, “snow volleyball” games, stargazing events and lots of warming bites & beverages. The Winter Rendezvous Pride Festival will also take place on the slopes of Stowe on January 18-22, helping to make the town the number-one spot in the state during the first month of the year. In the capital of Montpelier, they’ll be throwing a party at the State House Lawn Skating Rink on January 14, a unique sheet of ice located under the golden dome of Vermont’s capitol building.

Virginia
The Old Dominion’s beloved Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden will keep its GardenFest of Lights turned on all the way through January 8, keeping the spirit of the season alive and well well into the new year. Virginia Beach will host its Restaurant Week on January 16-22 and in Richmond, the Latin Ballet will be performing its ever-popular Legend of the Poinsettia—a heartwarming holiday tale at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen on January 5-8. Why not end your month at the Monthly Bluegrass Jam at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum in Bristol?

Washington
Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo will keep the bulbs glowing through January 22 at its Wild Lanterns event, which features life-size lanterns that resemble some of the most striking members of the animal kingdom. In Tacoma, the Lumens Concerts will present a series of striking dance, musical and art performances on January 12-14 at atmospherically illuminated venues around town. Back in Seattle, Tet—the Vietnamese Lunar New Year—will be toasted at Seattle Center on January 14-15 and in Spokane, you’ll be able to ice skate on the Numerica Skate Ribbon all month long.

West Virginia
Capital Charleston is the spot to be for the Capital City Classic bull riding event on January 14 and the WinterJam 2023 Christian music event on January 22. Health and wellness will be atop the agenda at the Berkley Springs resort on January 20-22 as it presents the Renewal Festival and in Morgantown on January 27, legendary basketball coach Bob Huggins will hold his annual Fish Fry—a soiree that raises money for a good cause—with special guest Charles Barkley.

Wisconsin
The Kickapoo Valley will hold its Winter Festival on January 7 (think skiing, sledding, ice cave hikes and snow sculptures) while Eagle River will hold its annual World Championship Classic Vintage Snowmobile Races on January 12-15 and the World Championship Snowmobile Derby the very next weekend (January 19-22). Lastly, the town of Elkhart Lake will hold its Schnee Days Winter Festival on January 27-29, a fun event that will include a chili cook-off competition, a spirit-sipping stroll, snowshoeing, live music and much more.

Wyoming
Green River is the spot to be for the Mac Attack Fishing Derby on January 14.
