Cambodian Villagers at Angkor Wat Face Eviction in Effort to Safeguard Iconic Heritage Site
Artist and thousands of families face eviction from Angkor Wat in Cambodia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Cambodian government plans to clear the settlements within the next four months, citing the lack of necessary infrastructure and sanitation. The population in the area has boomed due to increased tourist interest in the ancient temple complex, leading to an influx of food and souvenir sellers.
The government aims to reforest the areas where makeshift homes were previously located and relocate the residents to a new area called Run Ta Ek, 25 kilometers away from tourist routes. However, residents express concerns about losing their businesses and livelihoods, as well as the financial challenges of building new homes.
The government promises basic amenities and community facilities in the new location but long-time residents there fear the impact on their own livelihoods. UNESCO has raised concerns about the risk of urban development but has not called for population displacement.
