A recent survey conducted by KAYAK, the popular travel search engine, sheds light on the pressing issue of airplane etiquette. The survey sought to uncover what Americans consider socially acceptable versus annoying and rude behavior during flights.

With 64% of travelers having witnessed bad plane etiquette, KAYAK emphasizes the need to establish formal travel etiquette rules, especially with the busy July Fourth travel weekend approaching. Here are some key findings from the survey:

  • Reclining Your Seat: 88% of people say it’s okay to recline your seat, with one-third of them specifying it’s best on long or overnight flights.
  • Armrests: 57% believe the middle seat is not entitled to both armrests.
  • Socks Stay On: 76% of respondents insist on keeping socks on during the flight.
  • No Smelly Foods: 92% agree that bringing foods with strong odors, such as tinned fish and hard-boiled eggs, should be avoided.
  • Feet on the Floor: 68% say you shouldn’t put your feet up against the back of the seat in front of you.
  • Headphones On: 70% prefer passengers to watch something with headphones, and 94% view headphones on as a ‘do not disturb’ sign.
  • No Sleeping Excuses: Sleeping doesn’t excuse leaning on a stranger’s shoulder, snoring loudly, or refusing to wake up for others.
  • No Calls Before Landing: 69% agree that phone calls are not allowed before getting off the plane.
  • No Nail Care: 92% disapprove of clipping, painting, or filing nails during the flight.
  • Overhead Bin Rules: 73% say small items or jackets are allowed in the overhead bin.
  • Shoes On: 56% prefer passengers to keep their shoes on during the flight, but the margin was close at 56% vs. 44%.
  • Restroom Rules: 1 in 5 people believe it’s okay to use the restroom without shoes on.
  • No Babies on Board: 26% say it’s not okay to bring babies on flights.
  • Controlled Laughter: 58% say loud laughter at a movie is not allowed on the plane.
  • Hair Over Headrest: Over 1 in 4 people (26%) are okay with hanging hair over the headrest or seat in front.
  • Crunchy Food: 55% disapprove of eating crunchy food on a plane.

These insights serve as a helpful guide for travelers to ensure a more pleasant flying experience for everyone. Remember, good etiquette is key to a smooth journey.
