United Airlines is planning to boost its Asia schedule further this fall, adding more flights from Los Angeles to Tokyo and San Francisco to Taiwan, as well as inaugurating a new route between San Francisco and Manila, which will make United the first US airline to fly nonstop to the Philippine capital from the continental US. The airline announced the new and expanded routes on Tuesday, in response to the growing demand for travel to the Asia-Pacific region.

Starting on Oct. 29, United will fly daily nonstop flights between San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) in the Philippines, using its largest aircraft, the Boeing 777-300ER. The new route will complement United’s existing daily service to Manila from Guam International Airport (GUM).

Also on Oct. 29, United will add a second daily nonstop flight between SFO and Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) in Taipei, Taiwan, using a Boeing 777-200ER. The airline currently operates one daily flight between the two cities.

On Oct. 28, United will resume its service between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT), offering one daily flight on a Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner. The airline previously operated this route before shifting it to Tokyo Haneda International Airport (HND) in 2020. United will continue to fly one daily flight between LAX and HND as well.

Finally, on Oct. 28, United will launch a new service between LAX and Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), operating one daily flight on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. This will be in addition to United’s existing daily service between SFO and HKG.

Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances, said that the airline is seeing strong demand for travel to the Pacific region.

“In general, the Pacific is as strong if not stronger than the Atlantic is today,” he said. “With these new routes, United will fly to 15 different transpacific long-haul destinations this winter — more than other U.S. carriers.”
