An American Airlines pilot has gone viral for his preflight speech teaching manners to passengers. In a clip posted last week, he told passengers to “stow your stuff” and not use phones on speaker. He said he repeated the same points “every single flight” because of “selfish and rude” people.

The video, which was shared by comedy writer Anna Leah Maltezos on Instagram, has received over 4.6 million views and thousands of comments. Many praised the pilot for his stern yet humorous tone and his advice on how to behave on a plane.

The pilot reminded passengers to treat the flight attendants with respect and listen to their instructions, as they represent his will in the cabin. He also urged passengers to be considerate of others and not play videos or talk on speaker mode on their phones. He said that nobody wants to hear their personal business and that they should use headphones instead.

He also gave a tip to the passengers sitting in the middle seat, saying that they have the right to both armrests. “That is my gift to you,” he said.

The pilot’s speech comes amid a surge of unruly passenger incidents on flights, which have increased significantly since the pandemic. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, there have been more than 980 cases of passengers misbehaving on planes this year, mostly related to mask mandates.
