Norwegian Airlines “Seriously Evaluating” Boeing 737-10 MAX

Geir Karlsen, the CEO of Norwegian Air Shuttle, has indicated a renewed interest in adding Boeing’s B737-10 MAX to the airline’s fleet. This consideration comes after a restructured order with Boeing, which currently includes fifty B737-8 MAX jets with options for an additional 30 aircraft at undisclosed prices. These options are being explored for potential inclusion of the MAX 10.

Boeing’s improved delivery schedule, with shorter delays, has led Norwegian to take delivery of 16 MAX aircraft in recent months. The airline anticipates rapid fleet expansion throughout the remainder of this year and into 2024.

In terms of the MAX 10, Karlsen mentioned that Norwegian had previously been cautious due to range concerns within their network. However, based on new information, the airline is now seriously evaluating the MAX 10 for potential inclusion in its fleet. A Norwegian-configured MAX 10 would accommodate approximately 225 seats, potentially leading to reduced seat costs, contingent on price negotiations.

Regarding potential routes for the MAX 10, Karlsen noted that the aircraft’s range might suit operations from Oslo Gardermoen to destinations like Tenerife and the Canaries. Additionally, destinations such as Malaga in Spain and the opening of a base in Riga next year could offer opportunities for this aircraft type’s deployment, marking Norwegian’s expansion beyond the Nordics.

This renewed interest in the MAX 10 signifies Norwegian Air Shuttle’s commitment to optimizing its fleet for enhanced operational capabilities and route flexibility.
