airBaltic Explores Potential Base in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Latvia’s airBaltic is reportedly in discussions with the Slovenian government regarding the possibility of establishing a new base in Ljubljana. The airline, which submitted the sole bid in a recent subsidy tender for flights out of the Slovenian capital, is considering linking Riga with Ljubljana starting from May 2, 2024, with a planned frequency of 2 flights per week.

In the initial tender, Luxair and Air Montenegro applied for subsidies, but the latter withdrew from the process, citing insufficient coverage of fees at the airport. A third tender has since been issued by Slovenia to attract airlines to introduce new routes to the country.

While airBaltic has indicated its interest in enhancing air connectivity in Slovenia, the carrier has clarified that it currently has no plans to establish a base in Ljubljana. The extensive financial and organizational investments, along with the requirement for a new local brand, pose significant challenges.

Despite airBaltic’s reservations, the Slovenian Ministry of Infrastructure highlights the importance of improved air connectivity for the country. The discussions include considerations of possible Public-Private Partnership models to enhance Slovenia’s aviation landscape.

The move follows the collapse of Adria Airways in September 2019, leaving a void in Slovenia’s aviation market. airBaltic CEO Martin Gauss has previously expressed the potential for the country to establish its own carrier, similar to airBaltic’s successful transformation in the Baltic region.

As discussions continue, stay tuned for updates on airBaltic’s potential expansion into Ljubljana and the broader developments in Slovenia’s aviation sector.
