Despite challenging weather conditions, US airlines showcased remarkable operational performance during the 2023 Thanksgiving travel period. American Airlines led the way, reporting its highest-ever load factor for this time, indicative of its efficiency in managing the heavy travel surge. The airline welcomed more than 7.8 million customers from November 16 to November 28, marking its busiest Thanksgiving period ever. This success comes on the heels of American Airlines running the most reliable operation among U.S. network carriers for over 14 months, including a top performance in completion factor and on-time departures during the summer of 2023.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) also recorded a milestone on November 26, declaring it the busiest day in its history. This record-breaking figure reflects the heightened travel activity experienced across the United States during the Thanksgiving period. American Airlines’ operational success was particularly noteworthy given the adverse weather conditions, including a snowstorm at Chicago O’Hare (ORD). Remarkably, the airline managed to go nine days (Nov. 16–24) without canceling a single mainline flight, further highlighting its operational resilience and efficiency.

Overall, the airlines’ ability to manage such a significant influx of passengers with a high level of operational performance is a testament to their preparedness, strategic planning, and commitment to customer service during one of the busiest travel times of the year.
