In a recent announcement, the Brazilian Tourist Board (Embratur) has decided to postpone the implementation of the mandatory E-Visa system for travelers from Australia, Canada, and the United States. This delay, now extending until April 10, 2024, is aimed at fine-tuning the E-Visa platform and ensuring that the transition does not disrupt the influx of tourists from these countries during Brazil’s peak travel season.

Originally announced on December 1, the VFS Electronic Visa (eVisa) platform represents a significant change in Brazil’s visa policy. The program requires citizens from the U.S., Canada, and Australia to obtain an electronic authorization to enter Brazil. The online application process, priced at $89 per person, is designed to streamline entry procedures for international visitors.

This new visa system maintains the multi-entry feature and validity period of the traditional Brazilian visa. American passport holders will have a 10-year visa, while Canadians and Australians will be issued visas valid for five years, aligning with their previous visa durations.

Applications for the eVisa can be submitted through the vfs.global website. Embratur officials state that the application and approval process should take approximately five working days. Once approved, travelers will receive their eVisa as a PDF file via email. It is advised that visitors print a copy of the eVisa for border control and also keep a downloaded version on their smartphones for ease of access.

This postponement indicates Brazil’s commitment to ensuring a smooth transition to the electronic visa system, considering the importance of tourists from these countries to Brazil’s vibrant tourism sector. By delaying the launch, Embratur aims to provide a more seamless and efficient entry process for visitors, reinforcing Brazil’s status as a welcoming and accessible destination for international travelers.
