New York City, known for its dynamic energy and endless attractions, has hit a major milestone in its post-pandemic recovery. According to New York City Tourism + Conventions, the city’s official destination marketing organization, NYC’s tourism industry generated a staggering $74 billion in economic impact in 2023. This marks a significant boost for the city, which is on track to welcome over 61 million tourists this year, nearly matching the record highs of 2019.

This influx of visitors has been a boon for the local economy, supporting an impressive 380,000 jobs across the city. These range from roles in major hotel chains to small, family-owned businesses, underlining the broad reach of the tourism sector. Hospitality workers now represent nearly nine percent of the entire workforce in New York City.

Mayor Eric Adams celebrated this achievement, noting, “New York City is back. And this year’s tourism numbers prove our economic recovery is coming back stronger than ever.” The Mayor highlighted the widespread benefits of tourism, which bolster small and minority-owned businesses and create significant employment opportunities.

Fred Dixon, President and CEO of New York City Tourism + Conventions, echoed this sentiment. He pointed out that 2023 saw a return to pre-pandemic travel patterns, reinforcing the tourism industry’s vital role in the city’s economy. Dixon attributed this success to the city’s vibrant array of attractions, cultural offerings, restaurants, and improved visitor experiences.

Significantly, domestic travel to New York City has surged, with over 51 million visitors expected by the end of 2023, marking a 7.9 percent increase from the previous year. International tourism, which contributes nearly half of all visitor spending, is also on the rise, with an anticipated 10.8 million visitors in 2023 – a 14.9 percent year-over-year increase. Notably, the Chinese market, which was NYC’s second-largest overseas market in 2019, is showing signs of recovery as flight capacities increase.

However, business travel is still on the path to recovery. New York City, with the highest number of daily arriving flights in the United States, sees around 2,900 flights daily. While the hotel sector is projected to conclude the year with over 36.8 million room nights, it is still about 8 percent below the levels seen in 2019.

Looking ahead, New York City is keen to further strengthen its business travel segment, even as it celebrates the remarkable success of its tourism industry. This resurgence is a testament to the city’s enduring appeal as a global destination and its remarkable ability to bounce back and thrive post-pandemic.
