Cancun Introduces Tourist Cards: Your ‘Get Out of Minor Traffic Violations’ Pass

Cancun, the picturesque Mexican destination, is rolling out a new initiative set to provide visitors who rent cars with a special perk – the “Tourist Card.” Alma Reynoso Zambrano, President of the Quintana Roo Vehicle Rental Association, shared the exciting news that the city is reviving this tourist card, offering drivers a unique privilege: a free pass for minor driving infractions.

These digital tourist cards will be distributed to individuals renting vehicles in Cancun. Each card will contain a unique code that can be scanned to identify the name of the car’s driver.

However, it’s important to note that this doesn’t equate to unrestricted freedom on the road. Tourists will be entitled to two minor driving violations with just a warning from the Benito Juárez Transit Directorate.

The tourist cards are set to go into effect on December 19, with 10,000 cards already created and provided to car rental agencies in anticipation of the launch.

The revival of the tourist card was announced by local authorities in November, specifically for the winter holiday season. Alma Reynoso Zambrano, who chairs the Public Security, Preventive Police, and Traffic Commission, clarified that these cards do not grant tourists immunity from more significant driving infractions. Instead, they serve as a deterrent against potential corruption among transit agents concerning rental car drivers.

The Tourist Card was initially introduced in 2016 by the state of Quintana Roo but was later phased out before its recent reintroduction. This innovative initiative aims to enhance the experience for visitors to Cancun while maintaining road safety standards and integrity in traffic enforcement.
