Virgin Australia Boosts Regional Network With Link Codeshare
Virgin Australia is set to significantly expand its domestic regional network through a new partnership with Link Airways, a prominent turboprop operator. The collaboration involves a codeshare agreement, enabling Virgin Australia to offer more comprehensive regional coverage.
With this partnership, Virgin Australia will codeshare on over 90 weekly services operated by Link Airways, effectively increasing its regional network by 45%. This expansion will bring Virgin’s domestic network to a total of 42 destinations, marking a significant enhancement in its service offerings.
The codeshare encompasses 17 routes operated by Link Airways, including 10 from Brisbane, two from Sydney, three from Melbourne, and two from Canberra. This collaboration is not only a strategic expansion for Virgin Australia but also a boost for regional trade and tourism. Destinations like Inverell, Wollongong, and Biloela, which currently lack major airline service, are expected to benefit significantly from this partnership.
Link Airways, known for its efficient operation of a 14-aircraft fleet comprising Saab 340s and Fairchild Metros, primarily connects major centers with regional points along Australia’s east coast. This partnership is a strategic move by Virgin Australia to enhance connectivity and accessibility to various regional locations, underlining its commitment to expanding its footprint in the domestic market. Alistair Hartley, Virgin Australia’s chief strategy and transformation officer, emphasizes the importance of this partnership in supporting regional areas and expanding the airline’s domestic reach.
