Gabon Launches FLAGH to Strategically Invest in Airline Sector
In a significant move to bolster its aviation sector, Gabon has announced the formation of a new state-owned entity, Fly Air Gabon Holding (FLAGH), under the aegis of the Ministry of Economy. This strategic initiative, unveiled during a council of ministers meeting led by the country’s military head and interim president, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, on February 7, marks a pivotal step for Gabon’s transitional government in enhancing its footprint in the airline industry, both locally and internationally.
FLAGH’s primary mission is to actively pursue investment opportunities by acquiring stakes in airline companies, irrespective of their geographical location. This approach underscores the nation’s commitment to expanding its influence within the global transport sector. The creation of FLAGH, chaired by Nguema—who assumed power following a coup d’état last August—reflects a broader vision for Gabon’s economic and infrastructural development.
The organization is tasked with not only securing investments in the aviation industry but also managing and developing these interests to foster growth and integration across borders, especially within states affiliated with the OHADA treaties. OHADA, the Organisation for the Harmonisation of Business Law in Africa, plays a critical role in legal standardization and economic integration among its member states, offering a conducive framework for FLAGH’s operations.
In terms of governance, FLAGH is designed to operate with a high degree of independence in both administrative and financial matters. The government has appointed Francis Ledjoungou as the chairman of the board and Binta Mandji Lespinas, a veteran with approximately two decades of experience at Air France in Gabon, as the general director. Their leadership is expected to drive FLAGH’s mission forward, leveraging their extensive experience and insights into the aviation sector.
This development follows a revelation by Oligui in a New Year message, where he expressed the government’s intention to establish a new national airline. The ongoing feasibility study for this ambitious project indicates the government’s resolve to enhance Gabon’s connectivity and economic growth through strategic investments in the airline industry.
FLAGH’s establishment is a testament to Gabon’s proactive approach in navigating the complexities of the global aviation market. By seeking to acquire stakes in both Gabonese and foreign airlines, Gabon aims to create a robust network that supports its economic objectives while promoting regional integration and cooperation through the OHADA framework. This strategic venture is poised to significantly contribute to the country’s development trajectory, positioning Gabon as a key player in the African aviation landscape.
