Etihad Airways Achieves First Dual Aircraft Type Rating for Pilots on Airbus A350 and A380
Etihad Airways has marked a significant achievement in aviation by enabling its pilots to operate both the Airbus A350 and A380 aircraft, showcasing a new level of versatility in pilot training and qualifications. This innovative step makes Etihad one of the first airlines worldwide to offer such flexibility in its flight operations.
Traditionally, pilots are trained and certified to fly only one type of aircraft due to the specific operational and technical requirements of each model. However, Etihad has embraced the concept of Mixed Fleet Flying (MFF), which allows pilots to fly two different aircraft types that share similarities in flight deck design and pilot procedures. This approach has been made possible through specialized training programs, approved by both the aircraft manufacturer Airbus and the Civil Aviation Authority.
Mohammad Al Bulooki, Etihad Airways’ Chief Operating Officer, expressed pride in this groundbreaking achievement, highlighting its impact on enhancing the airline’s operational resilience and network flexibility. He emphasized that this milestone underscores Etihad’s commitment to innovation, efficiency, and customer satisfaction, with safety as the paramount priority.
Etihad’s history of pioneering such qualifications includes previous approvals for Airbus pilots to switch between the A320 and A330, as well as the A330 and A340, and for Boeing pilots to alternate between the 777 and 787. The latest certification for the A350 and A380 further solidifies Etihad’s position as a leader in advancing fleet commonality and operational efficiency.
