Overland Airways, based in Lagos, Nigeria, has officially initiated commercial operations with its newly acquired E175 aircraft, 5N-CCM, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s operational capabilities. This move comes as part of the airline’s broader strategy to expand and modernize its fleet, transitioning towards a mix of jet and turboprop aircraft to cater to the growing demand for domestic and regional air travel within Nigeria and beyond.

The Embraer E175, with a seating capacity for 88 passengers, embarked on its inaugural commercial flight on March 14, according to ADS-B flight data. Overland Airways celebrated this achievement on social media, highlighting the E175’s service across key Nigerian destinations including Lagos, Ilorin, Abuja, Akure, and Gombe. The addition of this newbuild jet in September last year signifies Overland Airways’ commitment to providing enhanced service quality and connectivity for its passengers.

This jet is the first of three E175 aircraft planned to join the Overland Airways fleet, with the delivery dates of the remaining two jets yet to be disclosed. The incorporation of the Embraer jets is a strategic move to bolster the airline’s domestic and regional service offering, aligning with its expansion objectives.

Historically, Overland Airways has operated a fleet predominantly composed of ATR – Avions de Transport Régional aircraft, including models such as the ATR42-300(QC), ATR42-320s, and an ATR72-200. Additionally, the airline has utilized an E145, wet-leased from the Bauchi State Government, to supplement its service capabilities.

The introduction of the E175 jets represents a pivot towards a more diversified fleet, allowing Overland Airways to offer a broader range of flight options and improve the overall passenger experience. As the airline continues to evolve, the focus on upgrading its fleet with more modern and efficient aircraft like the E175 underscores its dedication to meeting the needs of the Nigerian aviation market and its contribution to the region’s air transport sector’s growth.
