Alaska Poised for Record-Breaking Cruise Season in 2024
Alaska is on the verge of setting a new record for cruise visitation in 2024, building on the momentum of an already impressive 2023 season. The state, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and unique wildlife, has become a premier destination for cruise enthusiasts around the globe.
In 2023, Juneau, Alaska’s most frequented cruise port, saw an extraordinary 1.65 million visitors, a figure that not only underscores the state’s appeal but also hints at the growing trend of Alaskan cruises. This number marked a significant 30% increase from the visitor count in 2019, before the global pandemic impacted travel.
The upcoming 2024 cruise season coincides with Alaska’s celebration of its 65th anniversary of statehood, an event that is expected to attract additional visitors looking to partake in the celebrations. According to reports from The Orange County Register, around 19 cruise lines are gearing up to dispatch 43 ships to the Alaskan waters, indicating a broad interest from the industry in this destination.
The season is set to kick off in early April with the arrival of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Bliss in Skagway, carrying approximately 4,008 passengers. This event will initiate a series of nearly 100 more arrivals by Norwegian ships throughout the season, showcasing the line’s commitment to Alaskan cruises.
Other major players in the cruise industry are also increasing their presence in Alaska for 2024. Holland America Line plans to send seven premium-class ships on a total of 141 cruises to the state. Princess Cruises is not far behind, with 158 scheduled cruises to Alaska. Celebrity Cruises will bring its Edge-class ships for roundtrip sailings from Seattle through September, further enriching the offerings for cruise-goers.
Luxury cruise lines such as Silversea Cruises will feature Alaska itineraries on the Silver Nova, capable of accommodating 728 guests, and the smaller Silver Muse. Seabourn is also listing Alaska among its cruise destinations, adding to the variety of options available for travelers seeking high-end cruise experiences.
With more than 800 cruise ship arrivals expected during the 2024 season, Alaska is undoubtedly set to break previous visitation records. This surge in cruise activity not only highlights Alaska’s enduring allure as a travel destination but also signals a strong recovery and growth within the cruise industry. As cruise lines and travelers alike turn their sights towards the majestic landscapes and rich cultural history of Alaska, the state’s cruise sector is poised for an unprecedented year of success.
