Iberia Prepares for Airbus A321XLR Launch with Madrid to Boston and Washington Routes
Spanish carrier Iberia, set to become the launch customer for the Airbus A321XLR, has initiated reservations for its inaugural flights using this new aircraft type.
The airline has tentatively scheduled its first commercial A321XLR flight for November 14, connecting Madrid Adolfo Suarez-Barajas Airport (MAD) with Boston Logan International Airport. A second route from MAD to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is planned to commence in mid-January 2025.
Initially slated for sister carrier Aer Lingus, IAG reassigned the A321XLR launch to Iberia in May following unresolved pilot pay disputes at Aer Lingus. Iberia’s booking system reveals that initially, three of the four weekly flights between Madrid and Boston will utilize the A321XLR, gradually increasing to daily flights by December 15, all operated by this advanced aircraft.
Washington, traditionally a seasonal route during summer, will see enhanced year-round service with six weekly flights starting January 15, 2025, all operated by the A321XLR.
These developments mark a strategic expansion for Iberia in North America, complementing its existing routes from Madrid to cities like Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, New York JFK, and San Francisco.
IAG’s firm order for 14 A321XLRs, split between Iberia and Aer Lingus, underscores Iberia’s anticipation to receive the first aircraft by the end of summer. The A321XLRs will feature 182 seats in a two-cabin configuration, including 14 business class seats with full flat beds and direct aisle access, ensuring premium comfort for passengers.
As Iberia prepares to introduce these cutting-edge aircraft, the airline aims to enhance connectivity and passenger experience on transatlantic routes, positioning itself at the forefront of aviation innovation and service excellence.
