Windstar Cruises is celebrating the recent addition of the Marquesas Islands to UNESCO’s World Heritage List with two special cruises. The remote islands in the South Pacific were recognized by UNESCO in July for their unique cultural and natural significance, prompting Windstar to offer these exclusive celebratory voyages.

The first cruise is scheduled to depart on September 26 and will feature a 14-day itinerary roundtrip from Papeete, Tahiti, aboard the 312-guest Star Breeze. The voyage will be hosted by Hironui Johnston, Windstar’s French Polynesia attaché. Joining the cruise will be three mayors from the islands of Ua Huka, Fatu Hiva, and Tahuata. Throughout the journey, these island leaders will share insights into their UNESCO recognition process and discuss their sustainable practices, including rāhui, a traditional approach to resource management.

The mayors will also elaborate on their collaborative governance methods, the cultural legends that guide their leadership, and their initiatives to engage younger generations in preserving the Marquesas’ environment and culture.

Windstar’s “Tahitian Treasures & Magnificent Marquesas” voyage will also make stops at the Society Islands and the Tuamotu Islands. “We are honored to host the mayors of these incredible islands on board Star Breeze for this celebration of the UNESCO World Heritage status,” said Stijn Creupelandt, Vice President of Hotel Operations at Windstar Cruises. “This designation is a testament to their work at preserving their culture and environment.”

Additionally, the cruise will offer a range of hands-on workshops focusing on Marquesan traditions, such as lei crafting, haka manu (bird dancing), I’a mito (a fish dish similar to poisson cru or ceviche), and keukeu (a traditional dish with goat and coconut milk). Noted photographers Pat and Rosemarie Keough will also be on board to lead photography workshops, enhancing the guests’ experience.

For those unable to join the fall voyage, a second celebratory cruise is set for March 27, 2025. This offers another opportunity for travelers to explore the rich cultural tapestry and breathtaking natural beauty of the Marquesas Islands.

Having operated in French Polynesia for 36 years, Windstar began sailing to the Marquesas Islands for the first time earlier this year. Each sailing in the region features a designated French Polynesian cultural ambassador, ensuring guests receive a deeply immersive experience.

The Marquesas Islands are located approximately 900 miles from Tahiti and are celebrated by UNESCO as a biodiversity hotspot, making them an ideal destination for travelers seeking an adventure that combines cultural enrichment with natural exploration.
