Japan Airlines has officially begun retiring its Boeing 777-300ER fleet, marking the end of an era for the airline. The first aircraft was honored on September 19, 2024, with emotional farewell ceremonies at Haneda Airport (HND). Ground staff lined the runway to pay tribute as the aircraft headed into storage.

This specific Boeing 777-300ER was delivered to Japan Airlines in 2005 and became the fourth of its kind in the airline’s fleet. After slightly more than 19 years of dedicated service, it completed its final revenue flight on August 20, 2024, traveling from Sydney (SYD), Australia, to Tokyo Haneda (HND). Following its retirement, the registration changed to N3243P.

Japan Airlines previously operated a total of 13 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which will now be gradually phased out and replaced by the newer Airbus A350-1000s. The first of these advanced aircraft was delivered in December 2023 and features state-of-the-art interiors, including luxurious first-class suites designed to enhance passenger comfort and experience.

The transition from the Boeing 777-300ER to the Airbus A350-1000 reflects Japan Airlines’ commitment to modernizing its fleet and improving operational efficiency. With the new aircraft set to replace the existing 777-300ERs on a like-for-like basis, the airline anticipates having all 13 A350-1000s operational by 2026.

As Japan Airlines embraces this new chapter, the retirement of the Boeing 777-300ER signifies a significant shift in its long-haul operations. The A350-1000s are not only more fuel-efficient but also offer advanced technological features and enhanced passenger amenities. This modernization aims to provide travelers with a superior flying experience while aligning with the airline’s sustainability goals.

The farewell to the Boeing 777-300ER fleet has stirred nostalgia among both staff and passengers who have fond memories of flying on these iconic aircraft. The special ceremony at Haneda Airport serves as a reminder of the aircraft’s contributions to the airline’s legacy and the many journeys it facilitated over the years.

As Japan Airlines transitions to its new Airbus A350-1000 fleet, it continues to prioritize passenger comfort and operational efficiency, ensuring that travelers enjoy a premium experience in the skies. The future looks bright for Japan Airlines as it modernizes its fleet and reinforces its position as a leading carrier in the region.
