Wizz Air Targets Saudi Arabia, No JV Planned

Wizz Air Holdings is shifting its strategy regarding operations in Saudi Arabia, opting to develop the region as an “inbound market” instead of pursuing a joint venture with a local Air Operator Certificate (AOC), as previously considered. Chief Executive József Váradi shared this insight with Reuters, emphasizing the low-cost carrier’s focus on expanding its presence in the Middle East.
Recently, Wizz Air announced the launch of its inaugural route between London Gatwick and Jeddah International, scheduled to commence in March 2025. This route will be operated by Wizz Air UK using an A321-200NY(XLR) aircraft, marking the British AOC’s first service to Saudi Arabia. Despite this new route, Wizz Air, along with its subsidiaries Wizz Air Malta and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, already operates flights to major Saudi destinations including Jeddah, Riyadh, Dammam, and Madinah.
Váradi identified the London-Middle East corridor as one of the three key markets for the A321-200NY(XLR) aircraft, highlighting its strategic importance. This decision aligns with the carrier’s long-term vision for growth in the region, particularly as the Middle East continues to emerge as a vital aviation hub.
The Hungary-based airline had previously hinted at a possible joint venture in Saudi Arabia to capitalize on the country’s ambitious aviation and tourism growth strategy. In 2022, Wizz Air projected significant expansion within Saudi Arabia, with aspirations to establish a fleet of up to 50 aircraft based in the country.
By focusing on inbound traffic and expanding its direct flight offerings, Wizz Air aims to tap into the growing demand for affordable travel options to Saudi Arabia. The carrier’s strategy reflects a broader trend among low-cost airlines seeking to establish a foothold in rapidly developing markets, particularly those with government initiatives aimed at boosting tourism and aviation.
Wizz Air’s commitment to expanding its network in Saudi Arabia underscores the airline’s adaptability and focus on identifying opportunities within the evolving global aviation landscape. As the airline industry continues to recover and expand post-pandemic, Wizz Air’s approach may position it advantageously to cater to increasing passenger demand in this dynamic market.
