Delta Sees Shift in Europe Travel to Cooler Months

Delta Air Lines President Glen Hauenstein noted that traditional summer peaks for Europe bookings in July and August are becoming less pronounced as travelers shift to cooler months like September and October. This trend reflects tourists opting to avoid Europe’s record heat and crowds during the height of summer.

During an earnings call, Hauenstein said, “The weather in Europe in August is really hot, and people who can choose when to vacation are opting for more temperate months.” He highlighted that Delta has observed this shift over the past few years, with more travelers booking trips in the fall instead of summer.

Airlines, including Delta and United, are responding by extending their trans-Atlantic flight schedules well into the fall to cater to this demand. United Airlines, for example, launched some European routes earlier in March and April and will continue operating them through late October and November. This extended season offers travelers more value and a more comfortable climate.

With the summer of 2023 being the hottest on record, according to the European Union’s climate monitor, the shift towards cooler travel months is expected to continue growing, prompting airlines to adjust their strategies to meet evolving travel preferences.
