Boeing to Issue Layoff Notices Amid Ongoing Strikes
Boeing plans to issue layoff notices to thousands of employees in November 2024, with affected workers expected to leave the company by mid-January 2025. On October 14, Boeing informed the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) that it would send 60-day notices to union members on November 15, 2024. Additionally, a second round of notices may follow in December, as reported by industry sources.
During a visit to Seattle on October 14, Acting Secretary of the Department of Labor Julie Su met with IAM 751 leadership and Boeing representatives to assess the current situation and encourage both parties to resume negotiations. IAM President Jon Holden shared the union’s challenges and emphasized the sacrifices made by members over the past 16 years to support Boeing’s success. The union remains steadfast in its commitment to securing an agreement that reflects the respect and recognition its members deserve.
Boeing is navigating a difficult period marked by financial losses and aircraft production delays stemming from an ongoing work stoppage involving 33,000 workers on the U.S. West Coast. On October 11, Boeing announced plans to lay off approximately 17,000 employees—about 10% of its workforce—while also delaying the first deliveries of its 777X jet.
The strikes have particularly affected major buyers like Emirates, which relies on Boeing’s widebody aircraft. The airline announced on October 14 that delays with the Boeing 777 model are forcing it to extend the service life of its current fleet. Tim Clark, President of Emirates, expressed concerns over the uncertainty surrounding the Type Inspection Authorization for the 777X, stating that with no clear timeline for resumption, meaningful delivery forecasts from Boeing are highly questionable.
As Boeing faces mounting pressure, the company plans to engage in serious discussions with Emirates in the coming months regarding the delayed 777X model, now expected to be pushed back to 2026.
