Iran Denounces New EU and UK Sanctions as Unjustified

Iran has condemned the latest round of sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK), labeling them as “unjustified” and “contrary to international law.” Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, argued that the sanctions targeting individuals, airlines, and missile developers are intended to “divert public attention” from the ongoing “genocide of Palestinians.”

Baghaei specifically rejected the EU’s claims that Iran has transferred missiles and drones to Russia for use in the Ukraine conflict. He stated, “From the outset of the conflict, Iran has opposed the war and emphasized respect for the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of all countries, advocating for a diplomatic solution to the Russia-Ukraine dispute.”

The new sanctions, announced on October 14, 2024, were implemented in response to Iran’s alleged efforts to “undermine peace and security” in the Middle East. Among those sanctioned are Saha Airlines, Mahan Air, and Iran Air, along with two procurement firms. The EU asserted that these entities are responsible for supplying Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and related technologies to Russia, which are being utilized in its military operations against Ukraine. Additionally, two companies involved in producing propellant for rockets and missiles were included in the sanctions list.

In conjunction with asset freezes and travel bans on the airlines, prominent Iranian defense officials, including Deputy Defense Minister Seyed Hamzeh Ghalandari, have also been sanctioned. The measures extend to members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and managers of designated aerospace firms.

The UK has also targeted senior Iranian military figures and organizations believed to contribute to regional instability. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated, “Despite repeated warnings, the dangerous actions of Iran and its proxies are driving further escalation in the Middle East.” This round of sanctions includes individuals associated with the Islamic Republic of Iran Army, Iran’s Air Force, and the IRGC Intelligence Organization.

The sanction package further encompasses the Farzanegan Propulsion Systems Design Bureau (FPSDB), which develops parts for cruise missiles, and the Iranian Space Agency, which is involved in technologies applicable to ballistic missile development.
