Changi Airport Traffic Rises, Driven by Strong Growth in China Flights
Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) reported a strong increase in passenger numbers for the third quarter, with a 10% year-over-year growth in total passenger traffic, reaching 16.8 million travelers. This figure represents 97.4% of Changi’s pre-pandemic levels from the third quarter of 2019. China was a standout market, with passenger traffic between China and Singapore up by 50% year-over-year, making it Changi’s top source market for the quarter. Shanghai led this growth for the second consecutive quarter, with year-to-date traffic more than doubling compared to the previous year.
Other markets with over 10% growth year-over-year included Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, London, Melbourne, and Tokyo, signaling robust regional and international demand. “North Asia continued to be the top performer this quarter,” noted Lim Ching Kiat, Changi’s executive vice president for air hub and cargo development, pointing out the strong growth in outbound and inbound travel for China, Hong Kong, and Japan.
Changi Airport also announced two upcoming route launches, with AirAsia Cambodia beginning daily flights to Siem Reap on November 9 and Peach Aviation launching daily service to Osaka on December 5.
Cargo operations saw notable growth, with SIN processing 512,000 metric tons in the third quarter, a 13.5% increase year-over-year. Growth was observed across all cargo flows, particularly between Singapore, China, and the U.S. Changi’s top cargo markets included Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, and the U.S., reflecting strong demand in both passenger and cargo sectors as travel and trade recover.
