Lufthansa to Operate Direct A350 Charter Flight to Falkland Islands in March 2025
Lufthansa is set to operate a special charter flight in March 2025, flying an Airbus A350-900 from Munich to the Falkland Islands. The German carrier will transport a group of polar scientists, engineers, and crew members bound for the research vessel RV Polarstern, supporting ongoing scientific missions in Antarctica.
The outbound flight, scheduled for March 10, 2025, will depart Munich-Franz Josef Strauss International Airport at 07:20 and land at Mount Pleasant Airport in the Falklands at 19:00 local time. The return flight departs on March 12 at 19:00, arriving in Munich at 13:20 the following day. The 8,043-mile (12,869 km) route will take approximately 15 hours and 40 minutes outbound, with the return leg estimated at 14 hours and 20 minutes.
Lufthansa’s A350-900, normally configured for 293 passengers, will carry fewer travelers for this mission, allowing for additional fuel storage. This marks Lufthansa’s third Falkland charter flight, following two Hamburg-to-Mount Pleasant flights in early 2021, which set records as the longest passenger flights in the airline’s history.
The Falkland Islands, a British territory located around 300 miles from Patagonia, serve as an ideal transfer point for Antarctic-bound expeditions. Previously, similar charter flights operated to Cape Town, South Africa. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the routing shifted to the Falklands to ensure safer transit to Antarctica.
This special Lufthansa flight underscores the airline’s ongoing support for scientific missions while providing essential logistical support to researchers exploring the polar regions.
