Star Air Expands Fleet with 16 New Aircraft by 2027
India’s Star Air plans to significantly expand its fleet over the next three years, adding 16 additional Embraer jets to bolster connectivity across underserved regions. Currently operating a fleet of nine Embraer aircraft, the Belgaum-based airline aims to grow its fleet to 25 by 2027, enhancing its presence in India’s Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. This fleet expansion aligns with Star Air’s mission of bringing improved air connectivity to what CEO Simran Tiwana calls “Real India.”
At present, Star Air operates four owned Embraer E145s and five dry-leased E175s, covering 21 airports across India. The airline’s expansion plan includes the addition of two more E175 jets within the next 12 months, followed by another four in 2026. Tiwana did not disclose specific details on the remaining aircraft to be added, which will contribute to Star Air’s goal of reaching 25 jets by 2027.
With the addition of new E175 aircraft, Star Air intends to increase flight capacity, boost frequency on established routes, and introduce services to new destinations. Tiwana emphasized the airline’s commitment to serving underserved areas, stating, “We reaffirm our commitment to reaching more underserved markets.” Star Air’s focus on improving access to smaller cities aims to fill gaps left by other airlines, connecting more remote regions to India’s larger urban centers.
As part of its expansion efforts, Star Air recently introduced a new route between Ahmedabad and Kolhapur, marking its 21st scheduled service route. The new route operates four times weekly using an Embraer E145 jet, and it demonstrates the airline’s continued focus on linking lesser-known destinations. The airline’s strategic emphasis on regional connectivity aligns with India’s UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) initiative, which promotes regional air travel to boost economic development and accessibility in smaller cities.
Star Air’s current route network spans various regional airports, primarily in India’s Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. By concentrating on these underserved areas, the airline has carved out a niche in regional connectivity. With the planned fleet expansion, Star Air will be well-positioned to add more routes and destinations, thus catering to rising passenger demand from India’s emerging markets. The E175 jets, known for their efficiency on short-haul routes, are ideally suited for regional operations, supporting the airline’s vision of cost-effective and accessible air travel across smaller Indian cities.
Star Air’s approach to fleet expansion also reflects a commitment to enhancing passenger convenience. The airline aims to increase flight frequency on its existing routes, providing more travel options and flexibility for passengers. This approach is expected to appeal to travelers in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, where air travel options are often limited.
Through its growth strategy, Star Air is strengthening its position as a regional airline dedicated to improving connectivity across India. By focusing on underserved routes and investing in the right aircraft to support regional travel, Star Air is poised to make a substantial impact on India’s aviation sector, particularly in smaller cities where demand for air travel continues to grow. The planned addition of 16 new aircraft by 2027 will empower Star Air to expand its network, increase capacity, and fulfill its mission of connecting “Real India” with greater ease and accessibility.
