Singapore Airlines Announces Major Retrofit for A350-900 Fleet
Singapore Airlines has unveiled plans for a comprehensive S$1.1 billion ($835 million) retrofit of its entire Airbus A350-900 fleet, which includes 41 long-haul and ultra-long-range (ULR) aircraft. Announced on November 4, 2024, this ambitious upgrade aims to enhance the travel experience for customers across all cabin classes.
For the first time, Singapore Airlines’ seven A350-900ULR aircraft will be fitted with a dedicated First Class cabin, while all 41 aircraft will receive new Business Class products. In addition, the Premium Economy and Economy Class cabins will be refreshed, ensuring an elevated experience for all travelers.
“Our extensive engagement with customers and stakeholders over the past six years has been crucial in designing our next-generation long-haul cabin products,” said Goh Choon Phong, CEO of Singapore Airlines. “We are excited to incorporate thoughtful elements into our new First Class and Business Class seat designs, pushing the boundaries of comfort, luxury, and modernity.”
The new seat designs for the A350 fleet will also be featured on Singapore Airlines’ forthcoming Boeing 777-9 aircraft. Alongside the seat upgrades, the latest version of Singapore Airlines’ KrisWorld in-flight entertainment (IFE) system will be introduced, featuring enhanced screens in both First and Business Class.
Phongs emphasized the significance of this S$1.1 billion investment, stating, “This retrofit reaffirms Singapore Airlines’ unwavering commitment to delivering an exceptional travel experience.” He added that the introduction of next-generation seats and the updated KrisWorld system, combined with the airline’s renowned service, will set new standards in innovation and customer experience.
The retrofit will be carried out by SIA Engineering Company in Singapore and is expected to be completed by the end of 2030. The first retrofitted A350-900 aircraft is projected to enter service in the second quarter of 2026, with the first A350-900ULR variant following in the first quarter of 2027.
Post-retrofit configurations will see the 34 A350-900 long-haul aircraft equipped with 42 Business Class seats, 24 Premium Economy Class seats, and 192 Economy Class seats. The seven A350-900ULR variants will feature four First Class seats, 70 Business Class seats, and 58 Premium Economy Class seats, marking a significant step forward in enhancing the travel experience for Singapore Airlines’ customers.
