CityAirbus NextGen eVTOL Prototype Achieves First Lift-Off
The CityAirbus NextGen eVTOL prototype has successfully recorded its first lift-off during its flight test campaign in Donauwörth, Germany. This significant milestone was announced on November 6, 2024, by Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters.
In a social media post, Even expressed his satisfaction, stating, “I’m happy to share that the #CityAirbus NextGen flight test campaign in Donauwörth, Germany has started with a first lift-off. A big thank you to all our teams who have contributed to this important step in the marathon that is Advanced Air Mobility (AAM).” The announcement was accompanied by a snapshot of the yellow aircraft hovering in the air, confirming the successful lift-off.
The last major update regarding the CityAirbus NextGen eVTOL aircraft came in March 2024 when Airbus inaugurated a new test center in Donauwörth. Alongside this announcement, a series of photos and a video showcasing the craft’s design and craftsmanship were released.
The CityAirbus prototype, which weighs approximately two tons and features a wingspan of around 12 meters, is designed to operate with an 80-kilometer range and achieve a cruise speed of 120 kilometers (75 miles) per hour. Airbus has noted that the design is “perfectly suited for operations in major cities for a variety of missions.”
While the CityAirbus NextGen is anticipated to enter the market in the latter half of the decade, Airbus has indicated that it is not in a rush to be the first eVTOL available, preferring to focus on thorough development.
The Donauwörth test center represents Airbus’s ongoing commitment to investing in Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) and the future of urban air transport.
