Former Spirit Airlines CEO Ben Baldanza Passes Away at 62
Ben Baldanza, the former CEO of Spirit Airlines and a prominent figure in the US airline industry, passed away on November 5, 2024, at the age of 62.
Baldanza led Spirit Airlines from 2005 to 2016, overseeing its transformation into an ultra-low-cost carrier. Despite facing public criticism for its aggressive marketing of ancillary services on top of low base fares, elements of this business model have since been adopted by many other airlines.
After leaving Spirit, Baldanza joined the board of JetBlue in 2018, where he played a role during JetBlue’s unsuccessful attempt to acquire Spirit Airlines for $3.6 billion in 2022.
Beyond his corporate endeavors, Baldanza was actively engaged in the public sphere, sharing insights on LinkedIn and co-hosting the popular podcast “Airlines Confidential.” He received numerous accolades during his career, including the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy, which he was set to receive in December 2024.
In 2022, Baldanza was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease that ultimately led to his passing. Despite his declining health, he remained active in public life for as long as possible, even utilizing AI to remaster samples of his voice to continue communicating with his audience.
His contributions to the airline industry and his pioneering spirit will be remembered by colleagues and fans alike.
