Zhuhai Air Show Launches with COMAC Orders and Spaceplane Model
China’s aerospace ambitions took center stage at the Zhuhai Air Show’s opening, as COMAC announced Air China as the first customer for its C929 widebody jet. This landmark order highlights China’s intent to expand its aviation footprint, while a model of China’s first commercial, uncrewed spaceplane offered a glimpse into the nation’s space exploration future.
The Zhuhai Air Show also featured a flight display by the Bayi aerobatics team, four J-20 stealth jets, and the J-35A stealth fighter, attracting significant attention on the ground. Meanwhile, COMAC unveiled a rebranded and upgraded version of its ARJ21 regional jet, now known as the C909. The updated model boasts reduced weight, noise, and operating costs, along with a fresh branding approach to unify COMAC’s product lineup.
In addition to the C929 order, COMAC announced that Hainan Airlines had committed to purchasing 60 C919 narrowbody jets and 40 C909s. Colorful Guizhou Airlines also signed for 30 C909s, with 20 firm orders and 10 provisional.
As COMAC builds its presence, Airbus China CEO George Xu emphasized Airbus’ commitment to growth within China despite competition. The company expects the A330neo jet to receive Chinese certification by 2025. Adding to the futuristic showcase, AVIC presented a model of an uncrewed spaceplane designed for cargo transport to China’s space station, offering a low-cost, reusable option for Chinese space missions.
The Zhuhai Air Show continues until November 17, showcasing China’s innovations in both civilian and military aerospace.
