Apple Teams Up with Airlines to Track Lost Luggage with AirTags
Travelers who’ve used Apple AirTags to track their checked luggage now have a more efficient way to share the location with airlines. Thanks to a new partnership between Apple and 18 major airlines, passengers can securely share their AirTag’s location via the Find My app, helping airlines reunite travelers with lost bags more quickly.
This game-changing feature is part of Apple’s latest software update, currently available in the iOS 18.2 public beta, with a full release expected later this year. The update will be available for iPhone XS models and newer, and the feature will soon be accessible to airlines, including Aer Lingus, Air Canada, British Airways, Delta, Lufthansa, and United, among others.
“This feature will make it easier for travelers to share location information securely with airlines, improving efficiency and reducing stress for both customers and airline staff,” said David Kinzelman, United’s Chief Customer Officer.
Apple’s senior vice president of services, Eddy Cue, emphasized the new feature’s potential, saying, “We’re excited to give users a new way to share this information directly with third parties like airlines, all while protecting their privacy.”
Airlines participating in the program, in collaboration with air transport tech company SITA, will integrate the Share My Location feature into their baggage tracking systems, helping reduce the growing number of mishandled bags. The feature allows users to stop sharing the location anytime, and the link will expire once the bag is returned or after seven days.
With fewer lost bags and quicker recovery times, this initiative promises to ease one of the most stressful aspects of air travel. Plus, with AirTags now on sale, it’s a great time for travelers to ensure their luggage stays tracked.
