Iberia Launches First Airbus A321XLR for Transatlantic Service
Iberia has officially introduced its first Airbus A321XLR, marking a major milestone for both the airline and the aviation industry. The aircraft, registered EC-OIL, began its revenue familiarization flights within Europe on November 6, 2024, before making its public debut at a media event on November 13, 2024, at Iberia’s La Muñoza facilities near Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD). The aircraft is set to begin transatlantic flights the following day, making this an exciting development in Iberia’s long-haul operations.
A Game-Changer for Long-Haul Routes
Iberia’s CEO, Marco Sansavini, highlighted the significant impact of the A321XLR on the airline’s strategy. “This aircraft is a game-changer, enabling long-haul services with a fuel consumption per seat that is 30% lower than that of widebody aircraft,” he said. The A321XLR’s efficiency allows Iberia to operate year-round routes, such as Madrid to Washington-Dulles (IAD), which was previously served by larger widebody aircraft like the Airbus A330. The new aircraft’s cost-effective operations also provide the flexibility to add more frequencies to U.S. destinations, improving Iberia’s competitive position in the transatlantic market.
Enhanced Passenger Comfort and Technology
Despite being a narrowbody aircraft, the A321XLR offers a premium passenger experience that rivals Iberia’s widebody fleet. The aircraft features 14 fully reclining business class seats and an economy cabin with a 30-inch seat pitch, ensuring a comfortable journey for all passengers.
In addition to passenger comfort, the A321XLR is equipped with advanced amenities, including:
Catering: The aircraft’s two galleys, featuring a steam oven, enable the crew to serve a wide range of hot meals, ensuring that catering quality matches Iberia’s long-haul widebody flights.
In-flight Entertainment: Seatback screens and Iberia’s entertainment platform are available for all passengers, enhancing the in-flight experience.
Connectivity: Passengers have access to onboard internet throughout the flight.
Fleet Expansion and New Routes
The A321XLR is the first of eight units Iberia will receive by the end of 2026. Initially, the aircraft will serve the Madrid-Boston (BOS) route, with a second A321XLR expected to join the fleet in early 2025 for the Madrid-Washington-Dulles route. The airline’s plan also includes adding more A321XLR destinations, with announcements expected later in 2024.
