EasyJet is expanding its Italian network with the addition of Rimini as a new destination for the summer 2025 season. Starting April 16, the budget airline will operate two routes to Rimini San Marino Federico Fellini Airport (RMI), offering flights from London Gatwick (LGW) and EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg (BSL). Each route will operate twice a week.

This expansion is part of the Emilia-Romagna Region’s ongoing efforts to boost tourism and improve international connectivity. The region is aiming to increase overnight stays to more than 65 million by 2030 and double its tourism sector’s GDP contribution to 16%. In 2023, the region recorded 61.8 million overnight stays and is now focused on expanding its international tourism by increasing the foreign market share to 35%. To help achieve this, the region is improving its regional airport system to better connect with major international markets.

“We are excited that easyJet will connect Rimini with London Gatwick and Basel starting in April 2025, and we view this as the beginning of a valuable partnership,” said Leonardo Corbucci, CEO of Rimini Airport (RMI). “We hope that more sectors of the local economy will come forward to collaborate with us to share our growth objectives in the coming years.”

Currently, Rimini Airport is served by Ryanair and Wizz Air, which offer routes to destinations such as Cagliari, Italy, and Tirana, Albania. Ryanair’s summer 2024 routes will include flights from Budapest, Kaunas, Krakow, London Stansted, Palermo, Prague, and Vienna. Luxair also operates regular services from Luxembourg. According to Sabre Market Intelligence, Tirana was the largest international market from Rimini in 2023, followed by Budapest and London.

Aviation Week Network’s consultancy, ASM, worked with Rimini Airport to secure the new easyJet routes. David Stroud, Managing Director of Strategy and Consulting at ASM, stated, “The arrival of easyJet will contribute significantly to the resurgence of international tourism in the Emilia-Romagna region, which saw over 16.4 million overnight stays and 4 million arrivals in 2023.”

EasyJet’s move into Rimini comes as the airline continues to restructure its operations in Italy. As the fourth-largest operator in the country behind Ryanair, ITA Airways, and Wizz Air, easyJet announced plans to close its base at Venice Marco Polo Airport in April 2025, relocating the three aircraft stationed there to other airports.

Additionally, easyJet plans to open new bases at Milan Linate and Rome Fiumicino airports during the summer 2025 season, contingent on the airline’s selection as a remedy-taker in the Lufthansa-ITA deal. This follows an agreement signed by the Italian Ministry of the Economy and Finance (MEF) in November 2024, clearing the way for Lufthansa’s planned acquisition of ITA Airways.

With this expansion, EasyJet continues to strengthen its presence in Italy, further enhancing connections between major European cities and the vibrant Emilia-Romagna region.
