Trans-Exec Focuses on G550 Fleet, Phasing Out GIV Jets

Trans-Exec, a private aviation operator based in Santa Monica, is doubling down on its business model of operating owned long-range Gulfstream jets. The company is transitioning out of its GIV models and expanding its G550 fleet, according to CEO David Bilson, who shared insights during NBAA-BACE in Las Vegas.
Trans-Exec’s current fleet includes one GIV, two GIV-SPs, three GVs, and two G550s, all under Part 135 certification. The company is actively negotiating the purchase of another G550 and plans to phase out the GIVs within three years due to aging concerns.
“We’re in the experience business, not just transportation,” said Bilson, emphasizing that fleet ownership ensures reliability and customer focus. “Owning the aircraft means I’m beholden only to my clients, not external owners,” he added.
Founded in 1979, Trans-Exec has evolved from managing aircraft to owning a Gulfstream-exclusive fleet. While newer models like the G700 offer enhanced performance, Bilson noted that current customer needs do not justify their adoption.
Operating primarily from Van Nuys Airport, Trans-Exec focuses on the California market, with 80% of charters touching the region. Despite steady demand, the company limits fleet size to maintain service quality and profitability, capping monthly flight hours at 45 per aircraft.
Bilson also highlighted the long-term value of Trans-Exec’s strategy, stating, “Customers appreciate our focus on quality and consistency, especially as market dynamics normalize post-pandemic.” With its customer-centric approach, Trans-Exec remains a leader in premium private aviation.
