Amazon Cargo Jet Skids Off Vancouver Runway After Flight Control Issue
A runway at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) will remain closed for approximately 48 hours after an Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767 cargo jet skidded off the runway during landing early Tuesday morning. The crew reported a “flight control problem” involving the leading edge slats, mechanisms on the wings essential for slowing the aircraft during landing.
The incident occurred at around 1:45 a.m., with the plane carrying approximately 10,000 kilograms of fuel. Air traffic control recordings reveal that the aircraft was traveling at a ground speed of about 200 km/h when it overran the runway, coming to rest nose-down in a grassy area. The plane’s engines touched the ground, but none of the three crew members were injured.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Emergency responders were on standby as the jet approached at high speed. The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident, focusing on the reported control system issues. Vancouver airport CEO Tamara Vrooman assured that there was no risk of the aircraft breaching the secure perimeter separating the runway from nearby infrastructure.
Impact on Airport Operations
All flights were shifted to the south runway, with only 5% experiencing minor disruptions. The airport encouraged passengers to check with airlines for updated schedules.
Efforts are underway to remove the aircraft, including unloading its cargo and building a temporary roadway to tow it from the grassy area. Weather conditions at the time included light rain and snow, which may have contributed to the incident.
