Singapore Airlines to Introduce New First and Business-Class Cabins

Singapore Airlines has announced plans to introduce entirely new front-of-the-aircraft cabins on its fleet of seven Airbus A350-900ULR (ultra-long-range) aircraft. These aircraft currently operate the world’s longest flight route between Singapore and New York, covering 9,585 miles in just under 19 hours. In addition to the New York route, the A350-900ULRs are also used for other long-haul flights, including services to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle.

The new first-class and business-class cabins will offer innovative features designed to enhance comfort, luxury, and modernity. CEO Goh Choon Phong stated, “The new seat designs will push the boundaries of comfort, luxury, and modernity,” reflecting the airline’s ongoing commitment to providing premium travel experiences. These updated cabins will debut in 2027, marking the first time that first-class seats will be offered on the ULR aircraft.

Although Singapore Airlines has been tight-lipped about the exact designs, the airline shared a glimpse of what passengers can expect. A rendering of the first-class suite reveals a spacious area with at least three windows, a wide-screen TV, and a lie-flat chair, suggesting a luxurious and private environment. Singapore Airlines already offers first-class services on its Boeing 777-3000ERs and Airbus A380s, where passengers enjoy suites with features like twin beds and separate armchairs.

The revamped business-class seats are also expected to feature enhancements, with the airline hinting at sliding privacy doors in the new design. This move aligns with a growing trend in the industry, with airlines like Air France, American Airlines, and Turkish Airlines adding or planning to add privacy doors to their business-class cabins.

Singapore Airlines has engaged extensively with customers and stakeholders to create its next-generation long-haul cabin products, taking into account evolving preferences and expectations. According to Goh, “Over the past six years, we have extensively engaged customers and stakeholders in the design of our next-generation long-haul cabin products.”

The current configuration of the A350-900ULR aircraft includes 67 business-class seats and 94 premium economy seats, with no economy seats to ensure comfort on long flights. After the retrofit, the planes will feature four first-class suites, 70 business-class seats, and 58 premium economy seats.

In addition to the A350-900ULRs, Singapore Airlines is upgrading 34 of its long-haul A350-900s. These aircraft will feature 42 new business-class seats, 24 premium economy seats, and 192 refreshed economy seats. These updates are expected to enter service in 2026, offering a refreshed travel experience.

While many airlines are reducing or eliminating long-haul first-class cabins in favor of more business-class seats, Singapore Airlines is expanding its first-class offerings. James Boyd, the airline’s vice president of public relations for the Americas, explained, “We are introducing first class to our nonstop services from the U.S. in response to consistent demand we see for premium air travel, particularly on the world’s longest flights.”

This move reflects the airline’s commitment to meeting the demand for luxury air travel, particularly on long-haul routes, and provides passengers with a distinctive and high-end experience.
