Ryanair Secures Slots at Paris Orly for Summer 2025
Ryanair has officially secured slots at Paris Orly (ORY) for the summer 2025 season, marking the Irish airline’s debut at the French airport. French airport coordinator Cohor allocated 840 slots to Ryanair, allowing the airline to launch daily flights to Bratislava Airport (BTS) in Slovakia and Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY) in Italy.
These slots are part of a larger pool of 8,112 slots available for reallocation at ORY, with 50% reserved for new entrants, in line with European Union regulations. Ryanair’s expansion into ORY is a significant development, as the airline has previously focused its Paris operations on Paris Beauvais-Tille Airport (BVA), located 56 miles from central Paris. In contrast, ORY is just 11 miles south of the city center, offering Ryanair a much more convenient access point to Paris.
Currently, Ryanair operates 82% of the scheduled capacity at BVA as of December 2024, according to OAG Schedules Analyser data. The airline also has some flights from Paris Chalons-Vatry Airport (XCR), which is located 100 miles from the capital. However, with the new slots at ORY, Ryanair can offer a closer and more accessible connection to Paris, enhancing its presence in the French market.
While Ryanair has secured slots for flights to Bratislava and Milan Bergamo, it did not receive approval for 12 other routes it applied for, including destinations like Cologne Bonn, Germany; Dublin, Ireland; Gdańsk, Poland; Girona, Spain; and Kaunas, Lithuania. These routes were part of Ryanair’s expansion strategy, but it remains to be seen if additional slots will be allocated in the future.
This move by Ryanair comes amid ongoing discussions over rising passenger taxes in France. The airline has warned that it may reduce capacity on French regional routes by up to 50% starting in January 2025 if the French government proceeds with its plan to increase taxes on air tickets. This potential tax increase is part of a broader effort by the French Parliament to raise an additional €1 billion ($1.06 billion) in aviation taxes as part of the 2025 budget.
Ryanair currently serves 22 airports in France, with its largest base at BVA, followed by Marseille, Toulouse, Nantes, and Nimes. The airline operates the only scheduled flights from cities such as Beziers, Carcassonne, Dole, Nimes, Poitiers Biard, and Tours Val de Loire. The airline has yet to comment on the ORY slot allocation process.
In addition to Ryanair, other airlines granted slots at ORY for the summer 2024 season include Air Corsica, Air Europa, easyJet, French Bee, LOT Polish Airlines, Volotea, and Wizz Air.
