Garuda Indonesia Plans Fleet Expansion for 2025
Garuda Indonesia, the nation’s flagship carrier, has announced plans to expand its fleet by 15 to 20 aircraft in 2025 under the leadership of its new CEO, Wamildan Tsani Panjaitan, who assumed his role in November 2024. This ambitious expansion, revealed during a press conference on December 6, 2024, aims to address increasing demand for air travel within the region.
The airline anticipates the arrival of two aircraft before the end of 2024 and another two in January 2025. This growth strategy aligns with comments from Erick Thohir, Indonesia’s Minister for State-Owned Enterprises, who highlighted the need for a larger commercial fleet to meet future travel demands. To achieve this, the country is looking to negotiate with major aircraft manufacturers, including Airbus, Boeing, as well as Russian and Chinese makers, reflecting a diverse approach to enhancing its aviation capacity.
Garuda Indonesia currently operates a fleet of 74 aircraft, with 55 active, including ten Airbus A330s in various configurations, six Boeing 777-300ERs, and 39 Boeing 737-800s, according to the ch-aviation database as of December 8, 2024. The carrier’s procurement strategy has seen several shifts in recent years, including the cancellation of an order for four A330-800neo aircraft in October 2024 and fluctuations in decisions regarding the Boeing 737 MAX order after safety concerns arose in 2019.
Despite these changes, both Boeing and ch-aviation still list an ongoing order for 49 B737 MAX aircraft as of December 2024. This fleet expansion and procurement strategy underscore Garuda Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening its operational capabilities and meeting the growing demands of air travel in Southeast Asia.
