Red Sea International Airport Plans Global Expansion
The Red Sea International Airport (RSI) in Saudi Arabia marked its first year of operations with discussions at Routes World 2024 in Bahrain, outlining its achievements and ambitious plans for international expansion.
Opened in September 2023, RSI serves The Red Sea, a luxury tourism destination on Saudi Arabia’s west coast. Strategically located within a three-hour flight of 250 million people, the airport is projected to welcome one million guests annually by 2030.
As part of The Red Sea’s development, RSI launched alongside three luxury resorts, with plans to expand to 16 by the end of phase one. By 2030, the destination aims to host 50 hotels and over 1,000 residential properties across islands and inland sites. Designed with sustainability at its core, the destination limits visitor numbers to preserve the ecosystem while generating renewable energy, including 700,000 solar panels powering the airport and destination by 2025.
RSI has pioneered green aviation in Saudi Arabia, offering sustainable aviation fuel and utilizing fully electric vehicles for passenger transfers. Its domestic operations began with SAUDIA Airlines, offering routes from Riyadh and Jeddah, later expanding to include flydubai’s international service from Dubai.
RSI Chief Commercial Officer Michael White shared the airport’s growth strategy at Routes World. Current plans focus on expanding connectivity within the GCC and into Europe, targeting Germany and the UK as key markets, with future aspirations for routes to the Americas and Asia.
Promoting its vision and opportunities, RSI is set to become a hub for luxury, sustainable travel.
