Air Kerala, a promising new entrant in the Indian aviation market, is on track to commence operations by mid-2025. CEO Harish Kutty announced to CNBC TV18 that the start-up is finalizing the requirements for its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) and anticipates receiving its first aircraft in April 2025, followed by a second in June. The airline aims to begin revenue services by mid-2025 and expand its fleet to six aircraft by the first quarter of 2026.

As a low-cost carrier, Air Kerala intends to initially focus on domestic routes, connecting smaller Indian cities using ATR72-600 turboprop aircraft. This strategic approach allows the airline to cater to underserved markets, providing affordable and efficient air travel options to passengers across India. The company has already secured an initial No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation, a crucial step towards operational readiness.

Backed by prominent investors, Air Kerala is poised for a strong market entry. The airline’s backers include Afi Ahmed, chairing the Sharjah-based travel management firm Smart Travel Group, and Ayub Kallada, chairman and managing director of Kallada Food Industries based in Dubai. Their investment underscores confidence in Air Kerala’s business model and growth potential within the competitive aviation sector.

Harish Kutty emphasized that Air Kerala has successfully filled all key positions necessary for the airline’s launch. While some key hires, including the chief pilot and heads of inflight service, safety, training, IT, and HR, are currently serving notice periods at their respective organizations, the airline is actively recruiting flight crews, ground staff, and back-office personnel in anticipation of the launch date. The operation of three ATR72-600 aircraft will require Air Kerala to employ approximately 300 people, contributing to job creation and economic growth in the regions it serves.

Air Kerala’s business model as a low-cost carrier focuses on providing affordable travel without compromising on quality and safety. By utilizing ATR72-600 aircraft, the airline can efficiently serve regional airports, ensuring connectivity to smaller cities that are often overlooked by larger airlines. This approach not only meets the demand for regional air travel but also supports local economies by improving access to essential services and business opportunities.

The timeline for Air Kerala’s launch is well-defined, with the first aircraft expected to arrive in April 2025 and the second in June 2025. Revenue services are projected to start by mid-2025, with plans to expand the fleet to six aircraft by early 2026. This phased approach allows the airline to scale operations smoothly, ensuring a seamless transition from the initial launch to full-scale operations.

Air Kerala’s commitment to excellence is reflected in its comprehensive integration strategy. The airline plans to implement robust safety protocols, invest in staff training, and leverage advanced technology to enhance the passenger experience. Additionally, the integrated frequent flyer program, set to be submitted to the Korea Fair Trade Commission by June 2025, aims to offer attractive loyalty benefits, encouraging repeat business and customer loyalty.

As Air Kerala prepares to enter the competitive aviation market, it aims to differentiate itself through exceptional service, strategic route planning, and a customer-centric approach. The airline’s focus on smaller cities and regional connectivity positions it uniquely in the market, catering to a niche segment that seeks affordable and reliable air travel options.

Air Kerala’s planned launch as a low-cost carrier in 2025 marks a significant development in India’s aviation landscape. With strong investor backing, a clear operational strategy, and a commitment to serving underserved markets, Air Kerala is set to become a key player in the regional air travel sector. As the airline progresses towards its launch, stakeholders and passengers alike can anticipate a new era of affordable and efficient air travel across India.
