United Airlines Boosts Global Reach with New Routes in 2025

In a significant expansion of its global network, United Airlines is set to introduce new routes and increase its international presence in 2025. This strategic move includes launching a new service between Los Angeles International Airport and Beijing Capital International Airport, as well as expanding transatlantic services from Denver International Airport.

Starting in early May 2025, United will operate three weekly flights from Los Angeles to Beijing using Boeing 787-9 aircraft. This service has received the green light from the U.S. Transportation Department (DOT), which mandates that the flights commence within ten days of May 1, 2025. Should United fail to meet this deadline, the awarded frequencies will revert to the DOT. Additionally, any frequency that remains unutilized for 90 consecutive days after launch will be considered dormant by the DOT.

This new U.S.-China route is part of United’s broader strategy to adjust and optimize its international network. The airline plans to down-gauge equipment on its existing San Francisco-Beijing service to a 777-200, complementing its current operations to China which include daily flights to Beijing from San Francisco and to Shanghai Pudong International Airport from both Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The expansion does not stop at the Pacific. United is also looking to strengthen its offerings from Denver International Airport by introducing six new destinations starting next summer, including a much-anticipated transatlantic service to Rome Fiumicino Airport beginning May 1. This new route addresses the significant demand for travel between Denver and Rome, which saw over 60,000 passengers last year, marking a 30% increase from the previous year. Rome is currently Denver’s largest unserved international market, and Italy ranks as the fourth-most popular destination for international travelers from Denver, trailing only behind Mexico, Canada, and the UK.

Additional new routes from Denver include a service to Regina, Canada, set to commence on May 15, and several domestic routes connecting Denver to Peoria, Illinois; Buffalo, New York; Redding, California; and Wilmington, North Carolina.

Expanding further south, United is scheduled to inaugurate its first-ever service from San Francisco International Airport to Panama City, Panama, on May 22. This daily, year-round service will utilize 737 aircraft, positioning United as the only U.S. carrier to offer direct flights from San Francisco to Panama City. Currently, Copa Airlines is the sole provider of nonstop flights between these two cities, operating up to twice a day with 737-9s.

United’s planned route expansions and adjustments are not only reflective of its growth strategy but also its adaptability in a rapidly changing global travel landscape. The airline’s ability to identify and respond to emerging passenger demands, geopolitical considerations, and market dynamics underscores its commitment to strengthening its position as a leading global carrier.
