Air India Expands Training Capabilities with New Aircraft Order
Air India is set to enhance its pilot training infrastructure significantly, aligning with its recent fleet expansion. On December 19, 2024, shortly after adding 100 new Airbus aircraft to its lineup, Air India announced the purchase of 34 training aircraft aimed at bolstering its newly established flight training school.
This latest order includes 31 Archer DX aircraft from U.S. manufacturer Piper Aircraft and three DA42-VI twin-engine aircraft from Diamond Aircraft, based in Austria but owned by a Chinese corporation. The Archer DX is renowned for its single-engine diesel power, offering an economical training solution, while the DA42-VI is celebrated for its fuel efficiency and modern glass cockpit, designed to ease the transition for cadets from single to multi-engine aircraft.
“The introduction of the DA42-VI is specifically aimed at enhancing training efficiency with its reduced fuel consumption and state-of-the-art cockpit technology. This will provide a seamless transition for our cadets into the commercial aviation environment,” stated Jane Wang, Director of Sales, Marketing, and Flight Operations at Diamond Aircraft Austria.
Scheduled for delivery starting in 2025, these aircraft will be stationed at Air India’s new flight training center located at Belora Airport near Amravati, in the state of Maharashtra. This facility is poised to revolutionize pilot training in the region, with the capacity to graduate 180 pilots annually.
The training center is equipped with cutting-edge facilities, including a fully digitized operations center and in-house maintenance capabilities. It complements Air India’s existing Aviation Training Academy in Gurugram, which is the largest of its kind in South Asia and spans an impressive 600,000 square feet.
This strategic expansion in training resources underscores Air India’s commitment to supporting its ambitious growth plans by ensuring a steady influx of well-trained pilots equipped to handle the demands of modern air travel.
