Ireland Purchases Falcon 6X for Government Transport

The Irish Department of Defence has ordered a Dassault Falcon 6X as the new VIP transport aircraft, with delivery expected in December 2025. The aircraft will be operational in time for Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union in late 2026.

The Falcon 6X, costing EUR53 million (USD55.1 million) plus VAT, exceeds the initial budget by EUR8 million (USD8.32 million). Tánaiste and Minister for Defence Micheál Martin highlighted its versatile role, including air ambulance patient transfers, medical evacuations, logistical support for Defence Forces missions, and non-combatant evacuation of Irish citizens from critical situations. The aircraft will also provide a flexible air transport service to support Ireland’s national and international commitments.

Configured to seat up to 14 passengers and three crew members, the Falcon 6X will be operated by the Irish Air Corps. It replaces the ageing Learjet 45 (msn 45-234), which has been in service since 2004. The Learjet, now 21 years old, has become unreliable and has not conducted any VIP charters in 2024.

This acquisition reflects Ireland’s focus on modernizing its government transport capabilities to enhance operational efficiency and meet evolving needs. With its advanced technology and extended range, the Falcon 6X is well-suited for both domestic and international missions, ensuring reliable support for the Irish government and Defence Forces.
