United Airlines Fast-Tracks Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus Members

United Airlines is expediting its rollout of Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet, offering complimentary onboard connectivity to MileagePlus members. The airline originally signed the aviation industry’s largest deal with SpaceX in September to bring Starlink to its fleet, aiming to enhance in-flight internet capabilities.

Starlink, already adopted by Hawaiian Airlines, AirBaltic, Air France, Air New Zealand, and Qatar Airways, sets itself apart by leveraging a low Earth orbit satellite constellation. According to United, this technology supports broadband activities like streaming, video calls, and online gaming, providing passengers with reliable, high-speed internet at cruising altitudes.

Currently, United offers Wi-Fi through four providers, with fees ranging from $8 for MileagePlus members to $10 for nonmembers. However, the existing services are often criticized for being expensive and inconsistent. The Starlink integration aims to address these concerns by delivering a more dependable and robust connectivity experience.

The move highlights United’s commitment to improving passenger experiences and aligning with cutting-edge technology trends in aviation. Passengers may even use the upgraded service for video conferencing apps like Zoom or Microsoft Teams, adding a new dimension of productivity—or potential annoyance—to flights.

By embracing Starlink, United positions itself as a leader in airline innovation, ensuring its passengers stay connected during travel.
