David Neeleman, founder and CEO of Breeze Airways, shared insights on culture, technology, and leadership at The Phocuswright Conference 2024 in Phoenix, Arizona. Emphasizing kindness, he said, “Being seriously nice is the cheapest way to dazzle people,” aligning with Breeze’s motto, “seriously nice.”

Launched in May 2021, Breeze Airways marks Neeleman’s fifth airline venture, following Morris Air, WestJet, JetBlue, and Azul. Operating in 66 cities across 30 states, Breeze handles 30,000 passengers daily with its 100-member “guest empowerment team,” using a text-based communication model for efficiency.

Neeleman highlighted the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in aviation, citing its applications in customer service, marketing, and maintenance. “AI enables us to enhance guest experiences by leveraging data to improve communication and operational efficiency,” he said. Breeze’s unique database includes contact information for all passengers, enabling direct updates on flight changes.

Addressing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), Spirit Airlines’ recent bankruptcy, and business travel trends, Neeleman urged entrepreneurs to “be extraordinary.” He also shared how his ADHD shapes his leadership, emphasizing regular team engagement to sustain the company’s vision.

“Developing a strong company culture requires constant communication,” Neeleman said, underscoring the importance of aligning teams with Breeze’s customer-first ethos.

With innovation and kindness at its core, Breeze Airways continues to redefine air travel, making Neeleman’s philosophy of “being nice” a cornerstone of its success.
