Spain is set to soar to new heights as its summer 2025 season is expected to register all-time-high capacity levels. Following a record year in 2024, when Spanish airports handled 309.3 million passengers—a 9.2% increase compared to 2023—airport operator Aena is gearing up for a transformative phase of infrastructure investments. Recent analysis using OAG Schedules Analyser data indicates airlines will offer roughly 118 million departure seats from and within Spain during the northern summer 2025 season. This represents a year-on-year growth of more than 3% and a substantial 14% jump compared to the summer season before the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2019. Notably, about 82 million of these seats will carry international passengers, highlighting Spain’s continued appeal to global travelers.

The record-breaking performance of 2024 has fueled further optimism within Aena, prompting significant infrastructure investments as part of its DORA 2027-31 plan. This ambitious initiative is designed to expand capacity, modernize facilities, and incorporate sustainability measures across Spain’s airport network. The strategic plan will be developed in consultation with airlines, local governments, and other stakeholders, ensuring that the growth of Spanish aviation aligns with economic and environmental objectives. Aena’s extensive infrastructure push not only sets the stage for handling higher passenger volumes in the coming seasons but also promises a more efficient, modern, and sustainable travel experience for all passengers.

Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport led the pack in 2024, recording 66.2 million passengers—a notable 9.9% increase from the previous year. This was followed closely by Barcelona El Prat (BCN), which welcomed 55 million passengers, up by 10.3%, and Palma de Mallorca with 33.3 million passengers, marking a 7% increase. In total, 21 airports across Spain achieved new passenger records, including key hubs like Alicante, Malaga, and Seville. The impressive numbers underline the robust recovery of air travel in Spain and emphasize the country’s appeal as a top destination for both leisure and business travel.

Looking at international markets, the United Kingdom remains Spain’s largest source of international departure seats, accounting for approximately 23% of the total. The capacity in the Spain-UK market is projected to grow by 6.5% year-on-year. Germany continues to hold its position as the second-largest market, even though its capacity remains steady. Other notable markets include Italy, which is expected to see a 2.8% increase, France with a modest gain of 0.6%, and a significant jump of 11.7% anticipated from the Netherlands.

Barcelona El Prat Airport is set to experience the most dramatic capacity increase, with nearly 1 million additional departure seats available compared to summer 2024. This surge is largely driven by Barcelona-based low-cost carrier Vueling adding over 550,000 seats, complemented by nearly 130,000 seats from Ryanair. Additionally, major carriers such as Delta Air Lines and American Airlines are each introducing more than 40,000 seats from BCN this summer.

As Spain’s aviation market continues to flourish, industry stakeholders are gearing up for a dynamic season. The upcoming Routes Europe 2025 event will be hosted in Seville from April 8-10 by the Spanish government, the Regional Ministry for Tourism, Culture and Sport of Andalucia, and Seville City Hall, further underscoring Spain’s commitment to becoming a hub for international aviation and tourism. With record-breaking passenger figures and robust capacity expansions underway, Spain is poised to set new benchmarks in the global aviation landscape this summer.
