Gastrointestinal Illness Outbreak Sickens Over 40 on Silversea Cruise
A gastrointestinal illness outbreak aboard Silversea Cruises’ Silver Ray has left over 40 people sick, including 38 guests and five crew members, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The symptoms, primarily diarrhea and abdominal cramps, were reported during the ship’s current voyage with 681 passengers onboard. The causative agent remains unknown. Silver Ray departed Callao, Peru, on January 4 and is expected to arrive at Florida’s Port Everglades on Monday.
In response to the outbreak, Silversea Cruises implemented enhanced sanitation protocols, including isolating affected individuals. The cruise line has not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident.
This marks the second gastrointestinal illness outbreak on cruise ships in 2025 to meet the CDC’s public notification threshold. Earlier this month, nearly 30 crew members aboard a Sea Cloud Cruises ship fell ill with presumed ciguatera poisoning.
The CDC recorded 18 cruise ship outbreaks last year, with most linked to norovirus. As gastrointestinal illnesses continue to challenge cruise operators, stringent health measures remain critical to passenger and crew safety.
Travelers are advised to practice good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing, to reduce the risk of contracting illnesses while onboard.
