At a vibrant launch event held at the ME London hotel, UK-based cargo developer Windracers introduced its cutting-edge unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), the ULTRA MK2. The new drone was unveiled in a high-energy presentation attended by media representatives, industry experts, and key customers. Founder and Group Executive Chairman Stephen Wright recounted the journey that began with “a blank piece of paper” eight years ago, ultimately evolving into a market-ready solution that is now setting new standards.

Building on the success of its first-generation UAV, the ULTRA MK1, Windracers has already established a global footprint. The ULTRA MK1 has been deployed in a wide variety of environments—from supporting Ukraine’s armed forces and delivering humanitarian aid, to conducting vital scientific research in the harsh conditions of the Antarctic. This diverse operational track record not only underscores the reliability of Windracers’ technology but also reinforces the company’s commitment to delivering low-cost, efficient UAV solutions that have a tangible positive impact.

The ULTRA MK2 incorporates over 80 significant enhancements compared to its predecessor, including the ability to offer double the power output. These improvements translate into a 50% increase in useful payload capacity and a substantial reduction in fuel costs per kilogram of cargo, making the ULTRA MK2 a particularly attractive option for customers looking to balance performance with operational efficiency. Developed in collaboration with researchers at Southampton University, the new model features a 10-meter wingspan and is capable of covering distances up to 1,000 km at a cruising speed of 77 knots, with a maximum cargo capacity of 150kg.

Windracers prides itself on its focus on cost-effectiveness and reliability. Group CEO Simon Thompson emphasized these principles during the launch, stating, “Low cost is everything to us, combined with dependability, and the reason we look at those together is how you disrupt the market.” Thompson highlighted that eliminating the need for a remote pilot is central to their strategy, as it significantly reduces operational expenses while ensuring ease of use and low maintenance. The ULTRA MK2’s design facilitates safe take-off, flight, and landing in various conditions—be it during the day, at night, or even in fog—without necessitating constant remote pilot intervention. This operational independence is further enhanced by the Windracers Autopilot, the company’s proprietary multi-layered flight control system that ensures robust performance even in the event of sensor or control unit failures.

In addition to its superior flight capabilities, the ULTRA MK2 integrates Windracers’ Mission Control—a state-of-the-art route planning and aircraft monitoring system. Designed with an intuitive interface, the system requires minimal training, ensuring that operators can efficiently manage missions and monitor performance in real time. This ease of use combined with advanced safety features makes the ULTRA MK2 an ideal solution for diverse applications, from logistics and cargo delivery to humanitarian operations.

At the launch event on January 16, 2024, industry voices such as NORCE and Aviation Sans Frontieres expressed strong support for the new UAV, noting its potential to transform operational efficiency while lowering costs for end users in regions like the UK and the US. Founder Stephen Wright expressed his pride in the achievements of the Windracers team, stating, “I am so proud of the Windracers team, who have performed phenomenally to bring ULTRA MK2 to market in a very short time period. I know the team shares my excitement as we see the operational impact of ULTRA MK2, for our customers to help people around the world.”

As Windracers continues to push the boundaries of UAV technology, the ULTRA MK2 stands out as a testament to innovation and practical design. With its enhanced capabilities and cost-saving measures, the new drone is set to make a significant mark in the cargo delivery and humanitarian aid sectors, providing reliable, efficient, and accessible aerial solutions worldwide.
