Birmingham Airport BHM Passenger Surge & Credit Boost

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) in Alabama welcomed 3.24 million passengers in 2024—a 6% rise from 3.05 million in 2023. The airport, the largest in Alabama, has expanded its network by adding three new routes and one new airline since early October.
Southwest Airlines leads with a 33% market share, recently launching flights to Phoenix and Nashville. Spirit Airlines also joined the market by introducing daily service to Fort Lauderdale. Along with Delta, American, and United Airlines, BHM now connects nonstop to 21 U.S. airports covering 18 cities.
A recent credit rating upgrade from Fitch Ratings improved BHM’s revenue bonds from A- to A. This boost reflects the airport’s strong financial recovery post-pandemic and improved liquidity from revised lease agreements. The rating upgrade positions BHM to secure lower interest rates on future debt for major improvement projects, further supporting its steady growth.
Overall, with enhanced connectivity and a robust financial profile, BHM is set to continue its upward trajectory in both passenger numbers and operational efficiency.
